{"id":66915,"date":"2025-09-16T05:02:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-16T05:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/66915\/"},"modified":"2025-09-16T05:02:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T05:02:11","slug":"trump-tariffs-fueling-inflation-congressional-budget-chief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/66915\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump tariffs fueling inflation: congressional budget chief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/108198706-17579372261757937220-41657998232-1080pnbcnews.jpg\" alt=\"CBO Director Phill Swagel: Seeing a lot of signs that the economy is weakening\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Congressional Budget Office director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2025\/09\/15\/cbo-director-phill-swagel-seeing-a-lot-of-signs-that-the-economy-is-weakening.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Phillip Swagel<\/a>\u00a0said Monday that President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump&#8217;s<\/a> tariffs appear to have pushed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/10000793\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inflation<\/a> up higher than CBO analysts had initially expected. <\/p>\n<p>His views differ from those of Wall Street analysts, many of whom have been bracing for tariff-driven price hikes, but have yet to see them in materialize. <\/p>\n<p>Speaking on CNBC&#8217;s &#8220;Squawk Box,&#8221; Swagel said the CBO analysis shows the economy has weakened since January, which he would expect to exert downward pressure on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/11\/inflation-breakdown-for-august-2025.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inflation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Swagel also shared his office&#8217;s long-term view of the impact of Trump&#8217;s tariffs: The CBO expects the levies to reduce the U.S. budget deficit by $4 trillion over the next decade by pouring money into the federal coffers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So $3.3 trillion of revenue and then $700 billion of averted debt costs,&#8221; he said. &#8220;That would be a big reversal in terms of the deficit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Read more CNBC politics coverage<\/p>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s tariffs face an uncertain future.
