The Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) is a leading candidate for realizing this advantage, and some success has been achieved for small problems. This value provides a baseline to measure how well QAOA is performing,\u201d said Jeffrey Larson, a computational mathematician in <a href=\"https:\/\/app.thequantuminsider.com\/groups-and-center\/8f0b18d2-0128-4ece-8982-3f56e20b94b5\/profile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-tqi-id=\"8f0b18d2-0128-4ece-8982-3f56e20b94b5\" data-tqi-name=\"Argonne National Laboratory\" data-tqi-logo=\"https:\/\/s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/tqd.s3.bucket\/metaverse\/logo\/Argonne National Laboratory.png\" data-tqi-type=\"groups-and-center\" data-tqi-url=\"https:\/\/app.thequantuminsider.com\/groups-and-center\/8f0b18d2-0128-4ece-8982-3f56e20b94b5\/profile\" class=\"tqi-company-link\">Argonne<\/a>\u2019s Mathematics and Computer Science division and a coauthor of the paper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researchers discovered that in the infinite-size limit, a high-depth QAOA state for the SK model converges mathematically to a single quantum spin coupled to bosonic modes. By translating the problem into this \u200b\u201cspin-boson\u201d system, the team replaced the costly calculations with much simpler simulations using matrix product state simulations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this problem setting, Larson developed a novel optimization method for identifying high-quality QAOA parameters. The simulations and parameter optimization were performed on the supercomputers at the <a href=\"https:\/\/app.thequantuminsider.com\/groups-and-center\/8f0b18d2-0128-4ece-8982-3f56e20b94b5\/profile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-tqi-id=\"8f0b18d2-0128-4ece-8982-3f56e20b94b5\" data-tqi-name=\"Argonne National Laboratory\" data-tqi-logo=\"https:\/\/s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/tqd.s3.bucket\/metaverse\/logo\/Argonne National Laboratory.png\" data-tqi-type=\"groups-and-center\" data-tqi-url=\"https:\/\/app.thequantuminsider.com\/groups-and-center\/8f0b18d2-0128-4ece-8982-3f56e20b94b5\/profile\" class=\"tqi-company-link\">Argonne<\/a> Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) and DOE\u2019s National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center. The researchers were able to use these facilities through a grant from the DOE\u2019s Innovative and Novel Computational Impact on Theory and Experiment (INCITE) program.
