Sept. 3, 2006: Europe&#8217;s SMART-1 spacecraft crashes into the moon in lunar death dive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-af39e4fa-a715-11f1-a576-e3f90b2b3413\">On Sept. 3, 2006, a European satellite named <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/2839-smart-1-space-probe-slams-moon.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/2839-smart-1-space-probe-slams-moon.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/2839-smart-1-space-probe-slams-moon.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SMART-1 crashed into the moon<\/a>! This wasn&#8217;t actually as disastrous as it sounds, because the spacecraft did it on purpose.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/734-moon-smart-1-returns-close-ups.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/734-moon-smart-1-returns-close-ups.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/734-moon-smart-1-returns-close-ups.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SMART-1 launched in 2003<\/a> and was the first European spacecraft to go to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a>. It was also the first mission of a program called Small Missions for Advanced Research in Technology, which was a series of low-cost spacecraft that the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Space Agency<\/a> launched to test new spaceflight technologies.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-af39e4fa-a715-11f1-a576-e3f90b2b3413-2\">SMART-1&#8217;s primary objective was to test something called Solar Electric Primary Propulsion, or a solar-powered electric engine. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/522-arrival-smart-1-moon-probe-reaches-target.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/522-arrival-smart-1-moon-probe-reaches-target.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/522-arrival-smart-1-moon-probe-reaches-target.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">While it orbited the moon<\/a> for almost two years, it looked for water ice and other chemicals on the lunar surface.<\/p>\n<p>When SMART-1 slammed into the moon, that was also done for science. The mission was expected to last just six months at the moon, but the probe persisted for about three years.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vanilla.futurecdn.net\/space\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>ESA initially expected <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/2839-smart-1-space-probe-slams-moon.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/2839-smart-1-space-probe-slams-moon.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/2839-smart-1-space-probe-slams-moon.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SMART-1 to crash into the moon<\/a> in September 2005, but mission managers devised a series of engine maneuvers that added a full year onto the mission. The probe crashed into the moon at a relatively slow 4,473 mph (7,200 kph) &#8212; Leonid meteoroid impacts on the moon are more than of 156,585 mph (252,000 kph), for example &#8212; in a region known as the &#8220;Lake of Excellence.&#8221; No spacecraft in lunar orbit saw its demise, but a telescope on Earth did record the flash from the lunar impact.<\/p>\n<p>It would take another 11 years before NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22106-lunar-reconnaissance-orbiter.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22106-lunar-reconnaissance-orbiter.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22106-lunar-reconnaissance-orbiter.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lunar Reconnaisance Orbiter<\/a> as able to spot the gouge in the lunar surface caused by the SMART-1 impact. That probe&#8217;s photo showed that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38279-europe-first-moon-orbiter-grave-found.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38279-europe-first-moon-orbiter-grave-found.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38279-europe-first-moon-orbiter-grave-found.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SMART-1 created a crater<\/a> just over 13 feet (4 meters) wide and a gouge over 65 feet (20 m) long when it slammed into the moon. ESA was hoping the mission could serve lead to a new era of interplanetary exploration by using a lower-cost and more fuel-efficent way of reaching other planets. The mission, ESA said at the time, could pave the way for missions to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15381-planet-mercury-facts-quiz.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15381-planet-mercury-facts-quiz.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15381-planet-mercury-facts-quiz.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mercury<\/a>, asteroids and more.<\/p>\n<p>Today, those hopes have been realized, quite literally.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/35671-bepicolombo-facts.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/35671-bepicolombo-facts.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/35671-bepicolombo-facts.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BepiColombo mission<\/a> to Mercury, a joint effort by the European Space Agency and Japan to send two orbiters to the planet, is <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/bepicolombo-mission-begins-mercury-arrival-phase-esa-jaxa\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/bepicolombo-mission-begins-mercury-arrival-phase-esa-jaxa\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/bepicolombo-mission-begins-mercury-arrival-phase-esa-jaxa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">beginning its arrival phase today<\/a> &#8211; Sept. 3, 2026 &#8211; by releasing the joined orbiter ahead of orbital entry.
