Credit: Pete Lawrence<br \/>\n<strong>What is opposition?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/what-is-opposition-astronomy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Opposition<\/a> describes when a superior planet \u2013 that\u2019s one with an orbit larger than Earth\u2019s \u2013 is on the opposite side of the sky from the Sun.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine a straight line running from the Sun, through Earth to the planet.<\/p>\n<p>In this position, the distance between Earth and the planet is at its minimum; as the alignment changes, the Earth\u2013planet distance increases.<\/p>\n<p>For a nearby planet such as Mars, the difference between opposition and other times is significant, the Red Planet appearing much brighter and larger through a telescope at opposition.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1278\" height=\"885\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Planet-Neptune-98b9c5f-e1604308755157.jpg\" alt=\"Neptune and its largest moon Triton imaged through a 356mm telescope. Although Neptune does appear a little brighter and a little larger at opposition, it\u2019s not by a margin than we can easily perceive.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At mag. +7.8, you will definitely need optical assistance to see Neptune.<\/p>\n<p>Binoculars can grab it, but a small telescope may be best.<\/p>\n<p>A 150mm telescope reveals its tiny 2.4-arcsecond blue-hued disc.<\/p>\n<p>Those with larger apertures will find Neptune\u2019s largest moon, Triton, is surprisingly easy to see \u2013 typically, a scope size around 200mm is needed, but stable conditions may favour smaller apertures.<\/p>\n<p>Neptune is currently 9\u00b0 west-southwest of Saturn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Neptune in September 2026 \u2013\u00a0at a glance<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Best time to see: <\/strong>26 September, 01:00 BST (00:00 UT)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Altitude:<\/strong> 37\u00b0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong> Pisces<\/li>\n<li><strong>Direction:<\/strong> South<\/li>\n<li><strong>Features:<\/strong> Small disc, blue colour, largest moon<\/li>\n<li><strong>Recommended equipment:<\/strong> 150mm or larger<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Share your observations and images of Neptune by emailing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/mailto:contactus@skyatnightmagazine.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">contactus@skyatnightmagazine.com<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Neptune is a distant world by any reckoning.
