{"id":671713,"date":"2026-09-04T05:35:11","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T05:35:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/671713\/"},"modified":"2026-09-04T05:35:11","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T05:35:11","slug":"pierre-cardin-museum-opens-in-venice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/671713\/","title":{"rendered":"Pierre Cardin Museum Opens in Venice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tComing full circle, the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/fashion-news\/fashion-scoops\/pierre-cardin-dies-fashion-industry-tributes-1234687344\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pierre Cardin<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/museum\/\" id=\"auto-tag_museum\" data-tag=\"museum\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Museum<\/a> was inaugurated in Venice on Thursday, a city dear to the late designer, who was born as Pietro Costante Cardin in San Biagio di Callalta, 25 miles away, in 1922.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTo mark the unveiling, his great-nephew <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/fashion-news\/fashion-scoops\/pierre-cardin-leshuttle-uniforms-modern-travel-design-1238686127\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rodrigo Basilicati-Cardin<\/a> held a grand costume reception, sending out an invitation to up to 600 people. The event deliberately coincided with the 75th anniversary of the legendary Beistegui Ball, or \u201cThe Ball of the Century,\u201d at\u00a0Palazzo Labia in Venice. The famed ball was hosted by Charles de Beistegui, the eccentric French-born Mexican multimillionaire art collector, socialite and interior decorator. Cardin created several costumes for the participants \u2014 including Salvador Dal\u00ec \u2014 at that event, which brought the designer international acclaim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve had the idea of a <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/fashion-news\/designer-luxury\/azzedine-alaia-foundation-expand-boutique-1239046875\/\" id=\"related_article_link_museum\" data-tag=\"museum\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">museum<\/a> in mind for the past four years, and, while at first I was thinking of Paris, I realized that it would make perfect sense to do it in Venice in our palazzo,\u201d said Basilicati-Cardin, who took over as chief executive officer of the company in 2018 and went on to become its president and artistic director in 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cVenice is such an international city, deeply connected to artists, exhibitions, cultural events, the Biennale Art and Architecture, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/film\/\" id=\"auto-tag_film\" data-tag=\"film\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">film<\/a> festival \u2014 and it\u2019s home,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe expansive Palazzo Cardin, which covers almost 10,800 square feet, was acquired in 1981 and the brand held a menswear show there in 2022. In the garden \u2014 an extension that is quite a rarity in Venice \u2014 Basilicati-Cardin has chosen to display a few artworks by French contemporary artist Patrick Breteau, known for his abstract sculptures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHe recalled how the late Cardin also created a collection of \u201cSculptures Utilitaires [Utilitarian Sculptures],\u201d functional furniture or usable works of art starting back in the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAhead of the opening, Basilicati-Cardin said in an interview that he was planning to display around 130 garments, avoiding crowding the spaces in the palazzo, with the idea of renewing the exhibitions every six months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cMy uncle kept his first models and never sold the [prototypes] from the runway. We have around 30,000 pieces, so we can stage exhibitions for 10 years,\u201d Basilicati-Cardin said with a chuckle. \u201cThey had an enormous value for him, reflecting his activity over 70 years, with 300 to 500 pieces created per year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAt Palazzo Cardin, which will be open for visits, the looks will not be displayed chronologically, he explained. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cMy uncle\u2019s designs are timeless and placed together, you can\u2019t tell when they are from.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-wwd-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/c9da66a5-1a38-4431-9f84-dbf48740635f.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"768\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tPalazzo Cardin<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAn area will be dedicated to objects and accessories, jewels and belts. \u201cHe always wanted these all to be very visible from afar and recognizable as Cardin in terms of colors, shapes and structure,\u201d Basilicati-Cardin observed. \u201cIt will be like a home museum, leaving his paintings, where he slept and so on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tVenice has been an influence on the late Cardin and more recently on the brand. The city\u2019s potential sinking future due to climate change was an inspiration for the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/runway\/fall-2026\/paris\/pierre-cardin\/review\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fall 2026<\/a> show, held in March in Paris. David Ebersole and Todd Hughes,\u00a0premiered in Venice at the film festival.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOne of nine siblings, Cardin\u2019s family escaped fascism, fleeing to France in 1924, and the film detailed his first steps in fashion, starting out at the house of Paquin, moving on to work for Elsa Schiaparelli and then at Christian Dior from 1947 to 1950, and his circle of artist friends, including Jean Cocteau, Christian B\u00e9rard, Pierpaolo Pasolini and Luchino Visconti.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBranching out on his own, Cardin was ahead of his peers in democratizing fashion, freeing women with his unconstricting shapes, and employing diverse models.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHe ventured into menswear and furniture, turned eyewear into a hot accessory, famously inked a slew of licenses, and traveled to bring his fashion around the world when globalization was not a given.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tKnown for his Space Age designs, specifically the Bubble dress, in the 1960s, Cardin also pioneered the little multicolored shift dress worn with PVC bonnets, gloves and thigh-high boots. He dressed many notables, from Jackie Kennedy to Elizabeth Taylor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHe acquired a 10,800-square-foot building in Houdan, which he called \u201cthe house of dreams,\u201d with the idea of creating a theater and artists\u2019 residencies. Basilicati-Cardin said he plans to include an atelier school to train young tailors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCultural activities include those held at the Espace Cardin and the Festival de Lacoste, France.
