An Abacus Data poll released last week found more than 70% of Canadians support Prime Minister Mark Carney’s decision to suspend trade talks with the U.S., despite the likelihood of job losses and economic uncertainty. Meanwhile, a Reuters\/Ipsos poll showed only 20% of Americans support the tariffs on Canadian goods and even fewer agree with renaming the lake.<\/p>\n
Some dual citizens deepened their ties to Canada.<\/p>\n
Sara Seager, a Canadian American astrophysicist who left the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was recruited by the University of Toronto under the Carney government’s push to attract top academics from abroad.<\/p>\n
Seager said when she renewed her Canadian passport, she explained to the officials working there why she was moving to Toronto.<\/p>\n
“I explained how Prime Minister Carney is giving over a billion dollars to recruit top talent from all over, but especially Canadians, to come home to help Canada become more sovereign from the U.S. in technology, trade and defense,\u201d she said. “The amount of Canadian pride in that row of passport offices was heart-melting.”<\/p>\n

Severing ties<\/p>\n
Ashley Chapman, chief operating officer of Chapman’s Ice Cream, a family-owned Canadian company, said his company pivoted away from using U.S. ingredients since Trump\u2019s first round of tariffs against Canada last year. By mid-2027, Chapman said, the company aims to cut its use of U.S. ingredients by 70%.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve got years left of Trump in power and we need to figure out how we insulate ourselves,\u201d he said.
