\n\tA final Soundgarden<\/a> album is coming, but we\u2019re not likely to hear anything from it this year, and certainly not before the Seattle band\u2019s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame<\/a> induction on Nov. 8.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s not a set release date or anything as of yet,\u201d drummer Matt Cameron<\/a>, who will become a two-time inductee after getting in with Pearl Jam during 2017. \u201cThere were a couple schools of thought, like, \u2018Hey, let\u2019s put out a single.\u2019 I think eventually we decided we want to make sure the whole thing is completed before we start releasing singles. I\u2019m excited for people to hear it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCameron, who announced his departure from Pearl Jam on July 7<\/a>, is understandably excited about his Rock Hall<\/a> distinction. \u201cIt\u2019s a huge honor,\u201d he acknowledges. \u201cI haven\u2019t really wrapped my head around it, and it\u2019s not lost upon me that it\u2019s pretty real to get in there two times. I\u2019m feeling great about everything.\u201d He has happy memories about the 2017 ceremony, including David Letterman\u2019s induction speech for Pearl Jam as well as watching Yes perform and meeting original drummer Bill Bruford, one of his heroes. \u201cOverall it was a pretty amazing time,\u201d Cameron recalls. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t really too stressful for me other than to make sure the performance was dialed in, because it was a big TV event. But other than that, it was a great evening.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGetting into the Rock Hall with Soundgarden, however, will mean something different to Cameron, who joined the group in 1986 and was part of all of its recordings.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey\u2019re both huge honors, of course,\u201d he says. \u201cFor me, personally, I helped build Soundgarden from the ground up, and I helped create the sound, I think, a little bit more than I did with Pearl Jam, which was definitely more of an established thing that I came into. So in that sense (Soundgarden\u2019s induction) is a little more meaningful for me as an artist and musician and songwriter to go in with a band that I helped (to) establish itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd while Soundgarden hails from a decidedly alternative scene that hasn\u2019t always given credence to established institutions such as the Rock Hall, Cameron says that \u201cthere was never really a reluctance to acknowledged this honor. I think we\u2019re always happy to be recognized by any established entity in the music industry\u2026It felt like even from the early days, fellow musicians noticed what we were doing, and the music industry definitely took notice, so\u2026it was nice to be recognized by the Grammys and whoever else.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSoundgarden\u2019s induction follows two previous nominations, in 2020 and 2023. The group finished sixth in the fan vote with 233,205.<\/p>\n

\n\tCameron is sending the Yamaha drum kit that he used to record the first three Soundgarden albums, as well as his first Keplinger snare drum. Soundgarden is planning to perform at the ceremony in Los Angeles \u2014 which will be aired live via Disney+ \u2014 but has not yet announced how the late Chris Cornell\u2019s vocals will handled. \u201cI think that\u2019s above my pay grade,\u201d says Cameron, who last December performed at a benefit concert for Seattle Children\u2019s Hospital \u2014 billed as Nudedragons \u2014 at which guitarist Kim Thayil and bassist Ben Shepherd were joined by Seattle vocalist Shaina Shepherd (no relation). He did, however, reveal that original bassist Hiro Yamamoto, with whom he recently performed in Seattle, will be involved in the ceremony, while an inductor is still being determined.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s just been really exciting to gather up all these people we worked with over the years that helped us create the band, create our legacy, and it\u2019s going to be a really great night,\u201d the drummer predicts.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the meantime, Cameron, Thayil and Shepherd are working to finish the eight remaining songs they started working on with Cornell before he committed suicide<\/a> after a performance in Detroit during May of 2017. \u201cWe\u2019re definitely over halfway done with it,\u201d Cameron says. \u201cKim is in the process of finishing his guitar parts; he wants to make sure they get exactly the way he wants them.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tSoundgarden \u2014 whose most recently release, 2012\u2019s King Animal, was its first new album in 16 years \u2014 began working on the material back in 2015; finishing them was delayed until legal issues between the band and Cornell\u2019s widow Vicky Cornell could be settled.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cEmotionally it\u2019s been extreme highs and extreme lows,\u201d Cameron says of working on the material. \u201cHearing (Cornell\u2019s) voice on these powerful hard rock songs is the most empowering thing in the world for me. Then I listen to his voice soloed up when I\u2019m working on stuff, or if Kim or Ben is working on something, and it all comes back to the fact that he\u2019s not with us and he left us in a way that has so many questions. It\u2019s been gut-wrenching but at the same time very empowering.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Soundgarden album is just one of the endeavors Cameron\u2019s been up to since, and before, announcing his departure from Pearl Jam \u2014 which he says was amicable. \u201cI definitely gave them a lot of notice,\u201d he notes. \u201cI\u2019ve spoken with Jeff (Ament) and Stone (Gossard) a little bit\u2026It\u2019s been fine. Hopefully we\u2019ll get back together at some point and have a beer or something.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tHe maintains, as he did in his original announcement, that \u201cI\u2019m at a point in my life where I want to redirect my time and energy in a way that is a little bit based on what I want to pursue as an artist at this point.\u201d That includes a new band, Is This Real?, in which he\u2019s serving as frontman and guitarist; it began as a Wipers tribute but is \u201calso recording original music I\u2019ve been writing over the years,\u201d with an album of mostly original material I\u2019ve been writing over the years\u201d expected in the near future.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe and Thayil, meanwhile, continue to work in the all-star 3rd Secret<\/a> (with Nirvana\u2019s Krist Novoselic, Void\u2019s Jon \u201cBubba\u201d Dupree and others), with hopes of possibly taking that band on the road.<\/p>\n
