{"id":672566,"date":"2026-09-04T17:06:14","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T17:06:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/672566\/"},"modified":"2026-09-04T17:06:14","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T17:06:14","slug":"richard-osullivan-dies-british-sitcom-star-aged-82","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/672566\/","title":{"rendered":"Richard O&#8217;Sullivan Dies: British Sitcom Star Aged 82"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tRichard O\u2019Sullivan, the sitcom actor whose lopsided grin entertained British audiences throughout the 1970s, has died aged 82.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tHe passed peacefully surrounded by his close family at the Brinsworth House, the Royal Variety Charity\u2019s care home for former entertainers, in Twickenham, London shortly after 6am local time today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe Royal Variety Charity said it was \u201cdeeply saddened to announce the passing of the legendary and much-loved British actor,\u201d who had lived at the home for 23 years following a stroke.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tO\u2019Sullivan was a fixture on British TV and amassed a huge following for his portrayal of Robin Tripp in iconic sitcoms <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/man-about-the-house\/\" id=\"auto-tag_man-about-the-house\" data-tag=\"man-about-the-house\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Man About the House<\/a> and its spin-off, Robin\u2019s Nest. Notably, the character inspired John Ritter\u2019s Jack Tripper in ABC\u2019s Three\u2019s Company, which was a remake of Man About the House, which Johnnie Mortimer\u00a0and\u00a0Brian Cooke wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tBorn in Chiswick, west London, on May 7, 1944, O\u2019Sullivan began his career as a child actor in 1953\u2019s The Yellow Balloon aged eight and then appeared in Peter Hall\u2019s production of Love\u2019s Labour\u2019s Lost at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre Stratford in 1956.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn the 1960s, he began landing film roles such as The Young Ones and Wonderful Life, both of which he appeared in opposite to Cliff Richard. In 1963, he played Pharoah Ptolemy XIII in Cleopatra, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThen came the sitcoms and a title role in the period adventure series Dick Turpin. Man About the House, in which he played a student chef, was seen as particularly daring for its time as it was among the first shows to place a man living with two single women, who were played by Paula Wilcox and Sally Thomsett.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe Royal Variety Charity said one of O\u2019Sullivan\u2019s last public appearances was with his friend and fellow Brinsworth House resident, Mike Yarwood, as they planted a tree together on the house lawn to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
