World number one Aryna Sabalenka called a halt to her third-round match at the US Open<\/a> after complaining she could smell marijuana.<\/p>\n

The two-time defending champion was 2-0 up and serving in the first set against Kamilla Rakhimova on Louis Armstrong Stadium.<\/p>\n

She stopped abruptly and spoke to her team before approaching the umpire\u2019s chair.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomeone is smoking weed,\u201d she told umpire Eva Asderaki-Moore. \u201cWould you mind to … because it\u2019s so strong.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asderaki-Moore spoke to an official on her radio and turned to someone else behind her, making a smoking gesture with her fingers, before play continued.<\/p>\n

The smell of weed around Flushing Meadows has been an issue this week but has broadly been confined to the outside courts, close to nearby Corona Park. Smoking of any kind is prohibited on the site itself. <\/p>\n

Sabalenka, who went on to win the match 6-3 6-4, said afterwards: \u201cI was, like, \u2018Guys, you can do whatever, you can smoke whatever, you can relax as much as you can, but please, to not do it around the tennis courts\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a bit tricky to handle that smell while you\u2019re trying to compete at your best. I felt like I have to tell the umpire maybe, like, they can see the person smoking so he can do it somewhere else.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlso, because it was a bit windy, I don\u2019t know if it was, like, coming from the crowd or was from the outside because the wind blows it into the stadium.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know. I just hope they\u2019re going to be a bit more aware of that stuff.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe [the match] is too fast so they want to slow down a little bit, so who knows? I don\u2019t know the effect from it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sabalenka was then mischievously asked how much of a high she was on after the match.<\/p>\n

\u201cHigh? The level? Now I can only hear the weed stuff,\u201d she replied. \u201cIf they\u2019re gonna keep smoking, I might get high!\u201d<\/p>\n

Sabalenka is not the first player to notice the smell of cannabis around the grounds. British number one Katie Boulter said that the aroma was \u201cdistracting\u201d.<\/p>\n

The USTA responded to the complaints earlier in the week by saying: \u201cWhile we can\u2019t control what takes place off the grounds of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, we continue to be vigilant as we maintain this facility as a smoke-free environment.\u201d<\/p>\n

American third seed Jessica Pegula fought \u200cback from a set down and Aryna Sabalenka cruised into the fourth round of the U.S. Open on \u200cFriday, while the Williams sisters were due to take the court again in doubles action.<\/p>\n

A day after Madison \u200bKeys saved five match points to stay alive, her compatriot Jessica Pegula recovered from a rocking opening set to down 2021 finalist Leylah Fernandez 1-6 6-4 6-3.<\/p>\n

Pegula, the number three seed who was runner-up in 2024, has a shot at achieving \u200bher childhood dream of reaching the world number one ranking in Flushing and is one of three players \u2060who could dethrone Sabalenka. She will play Romanian Sorana Cirstea next.<\/p>\n

Cirstea knocked out Italian \u200c19th \u200cseed \u200bJasmine Paolini in earlier action on the outer courts.<\/p>\n
