HYROX events are popping up in nearly every city, marathon participation is hitting record highs, and even more rugged pursuits, such as Spartan races and trail running, is booming. And with that growth has come debates of what’s hard to accomplish, and what’s not.

Right now, TikTok is debating one question in particular: Which is harder, a HYROX, or a half marathon?

Useful information, if you’re new to endurance events and considering taking on your first challenge. We tapped training experts what it takes to prepare for each event, how they test the body and mind, and which one ultimately presents the greater challenge.

Which is harder: a HYROX or a half marathon?

“Classic coach short answer: That depends,” says Erica Coviello, CPT, level 2 certified RRCA running coach and owner of Run Fit Stoked.

Before we get into it, it’s important to note that these are two extremely different events. A HYROX is a hybrid race that combines running and functional fitness exercises, such as rowing, lunges, burpee broad jumps, and wall balls. Competitors complete eight stations, running one kilometer in between each. A half marathon, by contrast, is an endurance running race that spans 13.1 miles.

During a HYROX race, you complete one exercise for a certain distance or repetitions, before moving to a new station—often one with a completely different movement pattern that challenges an entirely different set of muscles. In a half marathon, you’re doing the same repetitive motion over and over again for an extended period of time.

“A half marathon is a pure endurance test—can your body keep moving for 13.1 miles without breaking down? HYROX is a different kind of hard,” says Lacey Stone, CPT, celebrity fitness trainer. “You’re not just tired, you’re tired and your grip is shot from the sled pull, your legs are toast from the lunges, and now you have to run on top of it.”

Ultimately, what’s harder will really depend on “which ‘hard’ your body is used to,” Stone says. If variety makes the time pass more quickly, you may find the repetitive nature of a half marathon more mentally challenging. If you prefer to settle into a rhythm, hit your stride, and lock in, the constant transitions and varied demands of a HYROX may feel more difficult.

It may also depend on your training history.

“Non-runners often have a very hard time at their first Hyrox. Runners who don’t lift might want to throw themselves over the fence at Hyrox. Lifters and gym rats might curse themselves when they hit the 10K mark and learn they’re less than halfway to the finish line of a half marathon,” says Coviello. “You can find arguments on all sides of the aisle.”

If you’re brand new to fitness, training for a HYROX will require a steeper learning curve. You’ll need to master eight exercises—some of which might be brand new to you—nail the proper form to avoid penalties, and build up to completing each at the required weight for a certain distance or reps. Then, you’ll have to build the endurance to do them all back-to-back. Not to mention, you’ll need to have access to all of that equipment to train.

Running, while no easy feat, is only one skill you have to learn to be able to do a half marathon. Once you’ve established proper form and a solid fitness base, training largely focuses on gradually and consistently increasing your mileage (and speed, if you’re going for a certain time). Other than perhaps a new pair of running shoes, there’s no other investment needed to run a half. All you need is a safe place to train.

“For the person who has some baseline fitness in both areas, it usually comes down to how much time they have to devote to training and what they have access to—financially and geographically,” Coviello says.

Here’s what it takes to train for both events.

HYROX training requires more variety.

When training for a HYROX, “you can’t just run, and you can’t just lift,” says Stone.

A typical training week might look like two to three strength sessions built around the HYROX-specific movements, like sled push/sled pull, wall balls, lunges; two to three running sessions; and one “compromised” session that combines running and strength work, she says. How long you’ll need to train will depend on your current activity level. True beginners should train for at least 10 to 12 weeks, while more experienced hybrid athletes might need less time.

Half marathon training requires repetition.

Half marathon training varies from person to person. For true beginners or those returning with running after a long break, Coviello recommends three months of easy miles to build up your aerobic base, followed by a 12-week dedicated half-marathon training program. That may include a few short, easy runs during the week and a longer run on the weekends.

For someone with a solid base who is simply looking to finish the race, training typically takes eight to 12 weeks with some hills, tempo runs, and speed workouts, Coviello says. Runners pursuing ambitious PRs or hoping to qualify for a high-profile race might require a specialized 12- to 16-week program, with multiple harder-effort workouts a week.

Which should you try?

Ultimately, it comes down to which style of workout you enjoy most. If you like variety and strength training, HYROX might be your thing. If you prefer endurance and repetition, half-marathon might be a better fir. Both are challenging in their own ways, and what feels difficult to you might not feel as difficult to someone else.

Find the Perfect Women’s Health Training Program for You

Cori Ritchey, C.S.C.S., is the fitness editor at Women’s Health, as well as a certified strength and condition coach and group fitness instructor.
