But it flopped in comparison to the real thing played by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/dakota-johnson-direct-film-toxic-sets-play-psychopath-qa-1236306650\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dakota Johnson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThe people who commissioned this project from me asked me to use AI. They weren\u2019t using OpenAI, they were using licensable AI, training it off of Marilyn Monroe films that we had licensed. And I went for it. I was like, all right, I\u2019m curious, I don\u2019t know, let\u2019s see,\u201d she said Friday during The Future of\u2026 Creativity summit hosted by Finch &amp; Partners and CAA at Scuola Grande della Misericordia during the Venice Film Festival. \u201cThe idea was that we trained it on her, we then put her face on Dakota\u2019s face. We worked hard at it, and in the end, I threw it away because what was coming through Dakota playing Marilyn Monroe was so much more moving, human, alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tTo punctuate the point, she added, \u201cIt fundamentally did not work. All the reasons we decided to make this project to begin with were killed off in the AI version.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe 17-minute short film Flesh Impact stars Johnson and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/ellen-burstyn\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ellen-burstyn_1\" data-tag=\"ellen-burstyn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ellen Burstyn<\/a> as versions of the iconic Hollywood star. It was done \u201cwith the blessings\u201d of Monroe estate holders Authentic Brands Group and described in press materials as \u201ca love letter to one of cinema\u2019s most enduring icons.\u201d Johnson plays Monroe at the height of her fame while Burstyn stars as an imagined version of Monroe later in life. (Monroe was 36 when she died on Aug. 4, 1962.) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/peter-sarsgaard-elon-musk-mars-no-kings-ai-karlovy-vary-1236306623\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Sarsgaard<\/a> and The Pitt star Sepideh Moafi round out the cast.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-hollywoodreporter-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"322\" width=\"936\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tJohnson as Marilyn Monroe in Maggie Gyllenhaal\u2019s Flesh Impact.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPhoto credit: Genesis<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThough Gyllenhaal didn\u2019t specify exactly who asked for the AI version, the short is presented by automotive brand Genesis and produced by William Green for The Cut, Michelle Ross for Superprime, Nicolette Spencer and Melissa Moore for INNOCEAN. Executive producers include Maddi Carlton, Brandon Boerner, Rebecca Skinner, David Webb and Courtney Kivowitz, the latter of whom is Gyllenhaal\u2019s longtime manager. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDuring the panel discussion, Gyllenhaal also addressed the pitch that AI can democratize filmmaking and allow auteurs to make big-budget projects at a fraction of the cost. But she questioned why that is a common promotional tactic. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIt concerns me a little bit because they own it. Who\u2019s making the money off it? The people that are pitching that,\u201d she stated, adding that in the near future, a $40 million project could be done for $4 million and \u201cmaybe eventually\u201d $40,000. \u201cBut the thing is, if you can make a commercial good enough movie for $40,000 or even for $4 million, who\u2019s gonna give you $10 million to do it the old way? Nobody. Maybe there\u2019s a tiny, tiny little market for that. But that concerns me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFlesh Impact has its Venice Film Festival <a href=\"https:\/\/www.labiennale.org\/en\/cinema\/2026\/program-cinema-2026-public\/flesh-impact-2026-09-07-14-30?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=24175886132&amp;gbraid=0AAAAADwxD_opdFzy8JZgLk_EGMvYB9Ryg&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjw--7UBhCpARIsAGJBptjCIEFnYFlQ0J9iescliTkqKudfTa-lVF07dJG1bn_W-aFz-qMLpTUaAl07EALw_wcB\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">world premiere<\/a> inside Sala Grande on Sept. 7.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tGyllenhaal\u2019s comments about AI went viral \u2014 as first reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/global\/maggie-gyllenhaal-ai-dakota-johnson-marilyn-monroe-1236851468\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Variety<\/a> and in a video posted by the outlet on social media \u2014\u00a0and it wasn\u2019t her first trending moment during this year\u2019s Venice Film Festival. During an opening press conference featuring members of the jury, the Bride filmmaker, who won a best screenplay award in Venice for her directorial debut The Lost Daughter, was asked to comment on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/maggie-gyllenhaal-venice-jury-press-conference-women-1236687884\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lack of female filmmakers<\/a> in the main competition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI really am walking in with a question as to why there are so few women in the main competition,\u201d she told the international press inside Palazzo del Casin\u00f2. \u201cIt\u2019s much harder for women to get their films financed. Also, could it be possible that the things that women, having had a different experience of being alive in the world, want to make movies about are not always deemed high art?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThis year\u2019s competition selections came under fire for gender imbalance. One of the original films selected as 20 Golden Lion contenders \u2014 May el-Toukhy\u2019s Woman Unknown \u2014 is directed by a woman, down from six competition titles last year. The festival later added the Gaza documentary NAZA, co-directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, bringing the total to two. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tVenice artistic director Alberto Barbera noted the disparity when revealing the lineup, and Gyllenhaal in return acknowledged fest leadership for inviting her to preside over the jury as \u201ca <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/maggie-gyllenhaal-venice-jury-press-conference-women-1236687884\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">very important thing <\/a>to consider\u201d amid the scrutiny.
