A two-year-old boy died in hospital after being struck by a car in Rathkeale, Co Limerick.<\/p>\n
He was struck by a jeep in the Abbeycourt area of the town this afternoon.<\/p>\n
He was brought by a family member to University Hospital Limerick for treatment of serious injuries where he was subsequently pronounced dead.<\/p>\n
A man in his 30s was arrested at a different location under suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant.<\/p>\n
He was questioned at a garda station in Limerick about the incident and has since been released pending analysis of an evidential sample.<\/p>\n
The scene had been sealed off and there is a large garda presence in the area as forensic collision investigators carry out a technical examination.<\/p>\n
A post-mortem examination will be conducted at UHL by the State Pathologist tomorrow.<\/p>\n
A Family Liaison Officer has been appointed to support the family of the deceased.<\/p>\n
Garda\u00ed are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to contact Rathkeale Garda Station.<\/p>\n
They will be viewing CCTV footage in the area as part of the investigation.<\/p>\n
