Last month\u2019s figure came in much better than economists\u2019 expectations of a 0.2% increase, according to a poll by data firm FactSet. Retail sales are adjusted for seasonal swings but not inflation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfmj853100063b6nurldvwuu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Employers have hit the brakes on hiring in recent months as Americans once again grow pessimistic about the economy\u2019s future. President Donald Trump\u2019s widespread tariffs have also began to push up some prices, according to the Consumer Price Index.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfmj89q400083b6n78rfkbfg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet, US consumers haven\u2019t cut back their spending meaningfully, and they may continue to spend so long as layoffs don\u2019t surge.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfmi9yrn00003b6n873wu4o6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Retail spending was up across most categories last month, with online sales and purchases at clothing stores rising the most, increasing 2% and 1%, respectively.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfmjf0ec000d3b6nhm254wys@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The so-called control group of retail sales \u2014 a measure that strips out volatile components \u2014 rose 0.74% in August, up from July\u2019s 0.5% and well above economists\u2019 expectations of a 0.4% increase.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfmjix2n000g3b6njmxarb1g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sales last month were down at specialty stores and furniture retailers, falling 1.1% and 0.3%, respectively. Spending at health shops and department stores were both down 0.1% each.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfmjoai9000j3b6nbcrxwknc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe economy seems to be doing just fine for now and perhaps the slow-down in payroll jobs is one gigantic head fake when it comes to forecasting the economy,\u201d wrote Christopher Rupkey, chief economist at Fwd Bonds, in an analyst note Tuesday. \u201cConsumer spending is resilient.
