{"id":675911,"date":"2026-09-06T21:48:09","date_gmt":"2026-09-06T21:48:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/675911\/"},"modified":"2026-09-06T21:48:09","modified_gmt":"2026-09-06T21:48:09","slug":"pair-of-linked-spacecraft-draw-closer-to-mercury-after-nearly-decadelong-voyage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/675911\/","title":{"rendered":"Pair of linked spacecraft draw closer to Mercury after nearly decadelong voyage"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p> By Marcia DunnAP Aerospace Writer\u00a0  <\/p>\n<p>   Sept. 6, 2026 1:33 PM PT   <\/p>\n<p>CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla.\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Two Mercury-bound spacecraft left their mother ship behind last week and headed down the homestretch of their nearly decadelong voyage to the solar system\u2019s smallest and closest-to-the-sun planet.<\/p>\n<p>The linked European and Japanese spacecraft separated as planned from their cruiser, but controllers had to wait two anxious hours to receive confirmation via radio signals. The crucial operation was broadcast from the European Space Agency\u2019s control center in Germany, more than 124 million miles away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a brilliant moment,\u201d lead project scientist Geraint Jones said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>If all goes well, the conjoined spacecraft known as BepiColombo will enter orbit around Mercury in November and split from each other in December to map and study the entire planet from different altitudes. As of Thursday, the spacecraft still had 2 million miles to go before reaching its destination.<\/p>\n<p>Launched in 2018, the BepiColombo mission is named for Giuseppe \u201cBepi\u201d Colombo, the Italian mathematician who took part in NASA\u2019s Mariner 10 mission to Mercury in the 1970s. Only one other spacecraft, NASA\u2019s Messenger, has explored the puzzling, scorching planet that is just a little bigger than our moon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow tiny Mercury is and still it holds some of the biggest mysteries of our solar system,\u201d mission manager Santa Martinez said earlier in the week. <\/p>\n<p>Added Jones: \u201cThere\u2019s a huge amount still left to be learned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BepiColombo already has traveled more than 6 billion miles on its roundabout route, according to Martinez. <\/p>\n<p>It needed nine planetary flybys to reduce its energy enough to be caught in Mercury\u2019s relatively weak orbit. The last flyby, in January 2025, yielded stunning photos of Mercury\u2019s impact craters and volcanic plains.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning next spring, a slew of science instruments on the European and Japanese spacecraft will study the magnetic field that envelops Mercury, the planet\u2019s dense interior, and the geologic processes at the surface, including the hollows, or depressions, that scientists believe are being eaten away by minerals vaporizing from rocks.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a strange world of contrasts.
