ZELENSKY IS HOLDING another meeting with US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff following previous talks today.<\/p>\n

A senior Ukrainian official told AFP that the US envoys had brought new, possibly more workable proposals on ending the war with Russia to Kyiv.<\/p>\n

This comes after Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier today that war with \u201cat the moment\u201d looks likely to continue into winter.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not the same as it was before. This one now is more effective,\u201d the source told AFP, adding: \u201cThey\u2019re still talking. This is actually the most important part. There are three of them now.\u201d<\/p>\n

US envoy Steve Witkoff and Zelensky both gave upbeat assessments of the talks, but neither announced any breakthroughs on ending the war with Russia.<\/p>\n

Witkoff, who is President Donald Trump\u2019s business ally, and Jared Kushner, Trump\u2019s son-in-law, travelled to Kyiv a day after meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow \u2013 the latest of several visits to the city.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s trip to Kyiv was their first visit to the Ukrainian capital, which has been hit by deadly Russian strikes for more than four years.<\/p>\n

Zelensky said: \u201cWe very much hope that we will be able to reach agreements with our American partners, and we are counting on the support of our European partners if the war continues in winter \u2013 and this is how it appears at the moment.<\/p>\n

Witkoff added that both sides would need to compromise.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe think we have the ingredients to get to that place,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve had a very meaningful discussion, substantive, important, and we are very encouraged and we look forward to continuing this as long as it takes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kushner said he hoped his first trip to Ukraine for talks on ending the war with Russia would lead to \u201cnew ways to advance\u201d peace.<\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully this trip has come out with some new ways to advance forward. I think we\u2019ve learned a lot from the trip,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The White House said the pair met with Putin on Saturday to \u201cadvance President Trump\u2019s agenda of peace in the Russia-Ukraine War.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe two sides discussed substantive plans for next steps, which will be announced in the coming weeks, and look forward to equally productive meetings tomorrow in Ukraine,\u201d a White House official said.<\/p>\n

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov called the talks \u201cextremely frank\u201d, saying the Americans \u201cput forward a number of ideas on possible routes to a settlement\u201d, but did not elaborate.<\/p>\n

The Russian side told the Americans that Moscow was \u201cconfident\u201d it could achieve its military goals of seizing the rest of eastern Ukraine, Ushakov added.<\/p>\n

Both Russia and Ukraine have vowed not to strike each other\u2019s capitals for three days to allow for the negotiations to take place.<\/p>\n

It was Kushner and Witkoff\u2019s eighth visit to Moscow during the war.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian airspace has been closed since Moscow launched the war in February 2022 and visiting leaders have been arriving by train.\n<\/p>\n

Putin thanks Trump\u00a0<\/p>\n

In televised comments before the talks, Putin said Russia would ensure the safety of the envoys in Kyiv \u2013 a city Moscow has pounded with deadly strikes throughout the war.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will do everything that depends on us to ensure the safety of the negotiation process and mediators such as yourselves,\u201d Putin told Witkoff and Kushner.<\/p>\n

Earlier Saturday, Putin had thanked Trump for persisting in his efforts to end the war despite it being \u201cnot simple\u201d.<\/p>\n

Of the envoys\u2019 trip to Kyiv, he said: \u201cNo matter what happens next, contacts of this kind are undoubtedly always beneficial.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump said on Friday his envoys were bringing a \u201cproposal\u201d to end fighting.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have an idea for peace,\u201d he said, without elaborating.<\/p>\n

US efforts have so far not led to a breakthrough in the war, and peace efforts have stalled in part because of Washington\u2019s war with Iran.<\/p>\n

Russia occupied large swathes of eastern and southern Ukraine, and Putin has insisted Moscow is intent on seizing the rest of eastern Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Limited truce<\/p>\n

Both Moscow and Kyiv committed to suspending strikes as the negotiations took place.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Russian president, the commander-in-chief, has given the order from midnight not to strike Kyiv for three days,\u201d Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.<\/p>\n

Zelenskyy said he had spoken to the US envoys and also promised Kyiv would not strike Moscow.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom now through the end of Saturday, as well as on Sunday and Monday, Ukraine is ready to refrain from strikes on Moscow,\u201d Zelenskyy said.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, Putin said he had \u201cnoted that the Ukrainian side significantly reduced\u201d its strikes on Russia and Moscow.<\/p>\n

However, Kyiv said that Russian strikes had killed 10 people across the country Saturday \u2013 including a child and his family members in the Kharkiv region and two people outside Kyiv.<\/p>\n
