{"id":676421,"date":"2026-09-07T06:40:15","date_gmt":"2026-09-07T06:40:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/676421\/"},"modified":"2026-09-07T06:40:15","modified_gmt":"2026-09-07T06:40:15","slug":"data-centres-in-ireland-to-be-offered-cut-price-gas-in-return-for-possible-supply-disruption-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/676421\/","title":{"rendered":"Data centres in Ireland to be offered cut-price gas in return for possible supply disruption \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/data-centres\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/data-centres\/\">Data centres<\/a> are to get cut-price <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/lng\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/lng\/\">gas<\/a> in return for accepting a possibility of disruption to their supply under a proposal from the energy regulator. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The move comes as the regulator, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/commission-for-regulation-of-utilities\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/commission-for-regulation-of-utilities\/\">Commission for Regulation of Utilities<\/a> (CRU), warns data-centre expansion will make it hard to source enough gas to meet national demand during extreme cold events. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">CRU analysis shows just 17 planned new data centres would have the gas demand of six large gas-fired electricity generators or 2.6 million homes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Under the proposed deal, new data centres would get discount gas on condition they accept that when gas demand is very high nationally they may experience planned interruptions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">They may have to temporarily power down, postpone energy intensive operations or use an alternative fuel source. The CRU says that is likely to be diesel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The level of discount proposed has not been specified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" \">The proposed \u201cinterruptible gas connections\u201d policy highlights fresh concerns about the strain data centres are placing on the country\u2019s energy system and raises questions about fairness in energy prices and the climate impact of new fossil-fuel uses. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sinn-fein\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sinn-fein\/\">Sinn F\u00e9in<\/a> MEP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/lynn-boylan\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/lynn-boylan\/\">Lynn Boylan<\/a> said the proposal amounted to a series of \u201cwork-arounds\u201d when what was needed was a halt to data-centre expansion. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cRather than nip the problem in the bud by imposing a moratorium on data centres connecting to the gas grid, the CRU wants to roll out the red carpet for them,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A previous moratorium imposed because of strains caused by huge data-centre demand for electricity was lifted on condition data centres provide their own power. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Eventually, most of that power is to be provided from wind, solar and other renewable sources but in the interim, data centres must build their own generators which will run on gas. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">CRU says there would be enough gas to meet normally high winter demand but during a spell of severe cold there could be a shortfall of 9-18 per cent. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/09\/04\/naas-has-a-message-for-the-bond-villains-we-dont-want-your-data-centres\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" analysis is based on the sector expanding over the next six or seven years to include 17 new data centres that have applied for gas grid connections. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gas-networks-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gas-networks-ireland\/\">Gas Networks Ireland<\/a> is legally obliged to accommodate them. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The analysis \u201cassumes no additional entry capacity is constructed beyond that\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It says the gas demand of the 17 is \u201cequivalent to the peak gas demand of six 500 MWe combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) generators\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Boylan said the scale of demand was \u201coff the charts\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cFor context, the slightly smaller 445-megawatt Whitegate CCGT generator in Cork provides power for 445,000 homes,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe cheerleaders of data centres in Government will use this as an excuse to manufacture consent for an expensive, destructive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/lng\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/lng\/\">LNG<\/a> [liquefied natural gas] terminal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cInstead of saying to big tech enough is enough, they want to give them anything they want regardless of the impact on the public and climate.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The CRU said: \u201cIt has become apparent to the CRU that new large industrial customers \u2013 a cohort composed predominantly of data centres and electricity generators \u2013 and the new demand load they may require, have the potential to have a major impact on the gas system in the near future.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The regulator said it would not propose interruptible connections for power generators as this \u201cwould transfer an unacceptable level of security of supply risk from the gas system to the electricity system\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But it felt data centres could build flexibility into their operations to handle interruptions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In return, \u201ca tariff discount would be applied reflecting the probability of interruption.
