{"id":676697,"date":"2026-09-07T10:53:09","date_gmt":"2026-09-07T10:53:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/676697\/"},"modified":"2026-09-07T10:53:09","modified_gmt":"2026-09-07T10:53:09","slug":"clocks-will-move-back-a-day-earlier-this-year-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/676697\/","title":{"rendered":"Clocks will move back a day earlier this year \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Clocks are set to go back a day earlier this year as the winter months come in. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Daylight saving time ended on October 26th last year, but this year clocks will turn back by one hour at 2am on Sunday, October 25th. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Clocks go back at 2am on the last Sunday in October in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\">European Union<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/uk\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/uk\/\">UK<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This means extra light at the beginning of the day, along with the return of darker evenings. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Clocks in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/\">Ireland<\/a> move forward by one hour at 1am on the last Sunday of March. This will occur next on Sunday, March 28th, 2027, at 1am. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Clocks are moved forward and back to make the best use of natural daylight at different stages of the year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u2018Spring forward, fall back\u2019 is a term used to memorise daylight saving time. In spring, clocks move forward by one hour, and in autumn (fall), they move back by one hour. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Daylight saving time was created to conserve fuel and energy during the first World War and widely adopted in the 20th century. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In 2019, the European Parliament voted in favour of ending seasonal time changes. However, there has been no progress in making this change. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The European Commission has said it does not plan to submit a new proposal on the matter to parliament, meaning changes to summer and winter time are unlikely. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Politicians and campaign groups occasionally call for daylight saving time to be scrapped in Ireland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Fine Gael MEP Se\u00e1n Kelly has led a campaign in the EU for the biannual changes to be removed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Kelly, who is chair of the European Parliament\u2019s Working Group on the Biannual Clock Change, has argued the benefits for \u201cmental and physical health\u201d of putting clocks forward and leaving them as such are \u201cundeniable\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/offbeat\/putting-the-clocks-back-sleep-experts-question-benefits-of-not-changing-time-1.4390514\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Putting the clocks back: Sleep experts question benefits of not changing timeOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Clocks are set to go back a day earlier this year as the winter months come in.
