\u201cThe Matrix\u201d series co-creator Lilly Wachowski confirmed that she isn\u2019t involved with Warner Bros.\u2019 plans for a franchise revival, but suggested that her and her sister, Lana, have been asked to give their \u201cblessing\u201d to the Drew Goddard-directed project.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s maybe a thing that\u2019s happening with Drew Goddard. He doesn\u2019t want to go forward unless he gets our blessing,\u201d Wachowski said in an interview on \u201cThe Business\u201d at KCRW<\/a>. \u201cIt becomes this complicated situation \u2026 Maybe we\u2019re going to stick our noses in a tiny bit and see how we feel and if we want to pass on our blessing to Drew or not. Could be something that\u2019s coming down the road, but still unknown.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Wachowski sisters wrote and directed the original 1999 \u201cThe Matrix,\u201d along with its two direct sequels \u201cThe Matrix Reloaded\u201d and \u201cThe Matrix Revolutions.\u201d For the 2021 series revival \u201cThe Matrix Resurrections,\u201d Lana Wachowski took on writing and directing duties for the project alone. In her interview with KCRW, Lilly acknowledged that she\u2019s \u201ckind of done\u201d with the property that she co-created.<\/p>\n

\u201cWarner Bros., they want to make another thing. They\u2019re always going to want to make another thing. Personally, I don\u2019t want to play in that sandbox anymore,\u201d Lilly said. \u201cI\u2019m kind of done.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2024, Warner Bros. announced a fifth mainline installment in the franchise, tapping \u201cThe Martian\u201d screenwriter and \u201cCabin in the Woods\u201d director Goddard to write and helm the revival. The studio\u2019s initial confirmation of the project also stated that Lana Wachowski would serve as an executive producer. Lilly was not noted to be involved.<\/p>\n

Development has been quiet on \u201cThe Matrix 5\u201d in the two years since, though Goddard provided an update in March while promoting \u201cProject Hail Mary,\u201d which he wrote the screenplay for.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love what Lana and Lilly Wachowski did with those movies. They mean so much to me and I feel like they\u2019ve had a profound impact on my creative voice,\u201d Goddard told Variety<\/a>. \u201cI take this responsibility very seriously. I feel the weight of wanting to do right by the fans, wanting to do right by the creators and wanting to do right for myself as a fan.<\/p>\n

Lilly Wachowski recently shared that she is seeking funding for her next film \u201cThe Hunted,\u201d a political thriller with a production budget she says calls for a budget of roughly $10 million. The filmmaker told KCRW <\/a>that she is having trouble securing financing, saying the industry doesn\u2019t \u201cwant to make it because it\u2019s (got a) wall-to-wall trans cast \u2026 I have to get creative and figure out different ways that I can get this in front of people.\u201d<\/p>\n
