{"id":678092,"date":"2026-09-08T06:47:12","date_gmt":"2026-09-08T06:47:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/678092\/"},"modified":"2026-09-08T06:47:12","modified_gmt":"2026-09-08T06:47:12","slug":"fifth-of-irish-coastline-at-very-high-risk-from-flooding-erosion-or-sea-level-rise-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/678092\/","title":{"rendered":"Fifth of Irish coastline at \u2018very high\u2019 risk from flooding, erosion or sea level rise \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">One-fifth of the Republic\u2019s coastline is at very high risk from flooding, erosion, sea level rise or other coastal hazards set to worsen with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/climate-change\/\">climate change<\/a>, analysis from University College Cork (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/university-college-cork-ucc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/university-college-cork-ucc\/\">UCC<\/a>) shows. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The most exposed areas include some of Ireland\u2019s most densely populated neighbourhoods. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">More than 20,000 people in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\">Dublin<\/a> and 9,971 people in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/galway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/galway\/\">Galway<\/a> city live within 500 metres of coastline classified as at \u201cvery high exposure\u201d, according to the analysis. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A further one-fifth of the coastline, also with areas of high population concentration, is deemed to be at \u201chigh exposure\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The analysis also reveals how vulnerable Ireland\u2019s historical sites and monuments are. Of 8,871 raths, forts, ancient burial grounds and other cultural heritage sites located within 500 metres of the coast, one in five lie within \u201cvery high exposure\u201d zones. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The details feature in an online interactive <a href=\"https:\/\/ucc.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/instant\/sidebar\/index.html?appid=1c2d12ded52c4189931d09be41cb2252\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/ucc.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/instant\/sidebar\/index.html?appid=1c2d12ded52c4189931d09be41cb2252\">coastal exposure index<\/a> and map that allows anyone to click on any of 34,303 points to find out the type and scale of risks facing that area. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Each point represents a 250 metre section of coastline and is colour-coded according to a five-level exposure rating, with red denoting very high and green representing very low. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Ireland's Coastal Hazard Exposure Index\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/IQ4NFBEJPJDB5JXXKPMHX2VKM4.jpg\"   width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>Graphic: Ireland&#8217;s Coastal Hazard Exposure Index <img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Flooding Galway\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/6C6LN7SPNNDRPDKTBKYFT4OXXA.jpg\"   width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>Graphic: Ireland&#8217;s Coastal Hazard Exposure Index <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Underlying factors are examined \u2013 for example, whether an area is low-lying and easily flooded or composed of soft sand or mud that gets washed away in storms. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Hazards are rated using decades of wind and wave data to work out how big a threat sea level rise, storm surges and winter weather present. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In total, 60 per cent of the 8,575km coastline is ranked as being at moderate, high or very high exposure. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But while Co Mayo records the greatest extent of very high exposure coastline \u2013 24 per cent of the national total \u2013 fewer people are at risk there due to the sparser population. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">By contrast, Dublin, Wicklow, Wexford, Louth and Meath combined have just 8 per cent of the very high exposure coastline but have 44 per cent of the coastal populations that live within 500m of those stretches. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Global average sea levels are projected to rise by up to 1.1 metres above 1900 levels by the end of this century, having already risen by about 23cm since that starting point. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dr Aaron Lim, head of the Earth and ocean lab at UCC, said the index and map were intended to help people understand and prepare for hazards today and into the future. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis research gives Ireland a unique opportunity to be proactive rather than reactive,\u201d he said. \u201cFor the first time, we can identify where exposure to coastal climate hazards is greatest and use that evidence to guide national strategy and targeted regional action. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe decisions we make over the coming decade will shape how well our communities, infrastructure, businesses and cultural heritage can adapt to rising seas, coastal flooding and erosion.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The research also found that 38 per cent of the coastline benefited or could benefit from protections nature provided.
