(Image credit: Chelsea Gohd)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-241e49e8-a8a4-11f1-91a1-71e1a5460623\">On Aug. 30, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched into space aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket \u2014 then, after completing its job, the rocket&#8217;s boosters safely landed back on Earth. Watching the events unfold, Space.com&#8217;s Chelsea Gohd caught one of these beautiful landings on camera as onlookers at NASA&#8217;s Kennedy Space Center watched in awe.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-a95de032-a8a4-11f1-81e3-ad5ef36ec012\"\/>What is it?<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-b0ced7f4-a8a4-11f1-9f11-777bf763cc56\">The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/what-a-glorious-dawn-launch-why-the-roman-space-telescopes-picture-perfect-liftoff-beyond-earth-is-such-a-big-deal\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/what-a-glorious-dawn-launch-why-the-roman-space-telescopes-picture-perfect-liftoff-beyond-earth-is-such-a-big-deal\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/what-a-glorious-dawn-launch-why-the-roman-space-telescopes-picture-perfect-liftoff-beyond-earth-is-such-a-big-deal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Roman Space Telescope<\/a> is NASA&#8217;s next great observatory, meant to revolutionize how we view the cosmos. Equipped with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/inside-the-nancy-grace-roman-space-telescope-nasas-next-great-observatory\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/inside-the-nancy-grace-roman-space-telescope-nasas-next-great-observatory\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/inside-the-nancy-grace-roman-space-telescope-nasas-next-great-observatory\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">instruments<\/a> like a coronagraph that can directly image exoplanets and a Wide-Field Instrument (WFI) that has a massively wide field of view, it&#8217;s designed to work with big names like the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hubble Space Telescope<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21925-james-webb-space-telescope-jwst.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21925-james-webb-space-telescope-jwst.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21925-james-webb-space-telescope-jwst.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a> and reveal our universe&#8217;s intricacies on a grand scale.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-b0ced7f4-a8a4-11f1-9f11-777bf763cc56-1\">But to get to space, like any other space telescope, it needed a rocket to ferry it there. In this case, that was SpaceX&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39779-falcon-heavy-facts.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39779-falcon-heavy-facts.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39779-falcon-heavy-facts.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Falcon Heavy<\/a> rocket. Falcon Heavy is about 230 feet (70 meters) tall and can lift nearly 141,000 pounds (64 metric tons) of payload to low Earth orbit. And importantly, Falcon Heavy&#8217;s two boosters are reusable.<\/p>\n<p>After launching a payload to space, the boosters split and each lands back on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a> in an upright position. In the image above, Gohd captured one of those boosters landing in the distance.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-a95de0be-a8a4-11f1-aa85-a37b984d2cd4\"\/>Why is it incredible?<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-b0ced876-a8a4-11f1-ba9d-65d09a852a3e\">Though we hear about it <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-starship-record-37th-booster-flight-100-falcon-9-launches\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-starship-record-37th-booster-flight-100-falcon-9-launches\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-starship-record-37th-booster-flight-100-falcon-9-launches\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">so often<\/a>, there is something undeniably dystopian about living in a time when a rocket can land its parts back on Earth so precisely. I was also there for the launch of the Roman Space Telescope in Florida, and it was breathtaking to watch such a huge piece of equipment navigate mid-air and straighten itself before landing. The crowd in the picture was equally astonished while the event unfolded.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>My mother texted me just after she watched the Roman Space Telescope launch live online, exclaiming that the booster&#8217;s landing looked just like a taxi returning to its station, getting ready for the next task. I hadn&#8217;t thought about it that way before, but she was correct.<\/p>\n<p>One of the boosters that participated in Roman&#8217;s launch landed at Landing Zone 2 and the other hit the ground at Landing Zone 40. As NASA explained in a statement, one of these boosters carried out its very first mission while the other was on its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/blogs\/roman\/2026\/08\/30\/nasas-roman-space-telescope-falcon-heavy-upper-stage-takes-over\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/blogs\/roman\/2026\/08\/30\/nasas-roman-space-telescope-falcon-heavy-upper-stage-takes-over\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">third<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vanilla.futurecdn.net\/space\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Now, the next spectacle to take our breath away will be Roman&#8217;s very first images of the universe.
