You&#8217;d typically think of integrating an LED. But researchers at MIT have developed a low-tech, no-electronics-required way of accomplishing the same. Their process, called <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2026\/shiftlens-3d-printed-objects-can-tell-you-if-used-properly-0805\" style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1.1em;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ShiftLens<\/a>, is a way of 3D printing lenticular objects.<\/p>\n<p id=\"5a0c75_377\" data-ic-marker=\"217d7b_4873\">The idea is that you&#8217;ve got an outer lens layer of transparent material. Beneath that is a pattern layer printed in contrasting colors, in stripes that correspond with the linear lenses of the top layer.<\/p>\n<p id=\"703a8c_6649\" data-ic-marker=\"44fec2_3317\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1788891081_344_1848817_81_145281_JYbifk7S9.jpg\"\/> <\/p>\n<p id=\"546ad4_4204\" data-ic-marker=\"d3e5b6_2707\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-image-width=\"880\" data-image-height=\"495\" data-image-id=\"1848818\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1788891083_856_1848818_81_145281_JYbifk7S9.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"219773_918\" data-ic-marker=\"8461ee_4726\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-image-width=\"880\" data-image-height=\"495\" data-image-id=\"1848819\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1788891084_425_1848819_81_145281_oPmwS93lB.jpg\" style=\"font-size: 1.1em;\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"2d5b27_3244\" data-ic-marker=\"3f5b75_2924\">Moving the lens layer yields the following effect:<\/p>\n<p id=\"62e799_960\" data-ic-marker=\"459311_2687\">The actuating mechanism needn&#8217;t be a switch:<\/p>\n<p id=\"a206c3_992\" data-ic-marker=\"5df2d4_4902\">In this example, they&#8217;ve applied it to a cylindrical object, with the use case being a chemical container that lets you know when it&#8217;s properly sealed:<\/p>\n<p id=\"940ef3_596\" data-ic-marker=\"bfcf5_2569\">&#8220;With our system, an object can tell you whether you are using it properly, without the need for sensors or any complicated electronics,&#8221; says grad student Yunyi Zhu, of MIT&#8217;s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS). &#8220;The interactive display is mechanical, so you can create a self-contained, multistate, interactive device that a user can control very intuitively.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"7fea1b_2779\" data-ic-marker=\"640beb_2072\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1788891085_285_1848820_81_145281_LB5I05kUk.jpg\"\/> <\/p>\n<p id=\"f6cb74_328\" data-ic-marker=\"679a78_1266\">Zhu and her team developed a design tool that integrates with Rhino and allows the user to apply the ShiftLens process to their own designs.
