The British-led lander was due to reach Mars on 25 December 2003, then transmit from the surface. When no signal came, the silence left several possible failures unresolved: entry into the atmosphere, descent, touchdown or the steps required to begin operating afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>Images announced in January 2015 changed that picture. A small, reflective object in Isidis Planitia appeared consistent with the lander and deployed solar panels. The evidence suggested that Beagle 2 had reached the ground successfully, then failed to establish contact.<\/p>\n<p>The blocked-antenna explanation remains an interpretation of remote images. Later modelling suggested at least three, possibly all four, panels had opened, leaving the exact final configuration uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>The missing message came after separation<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/Mars_Express\/Beagle-2_lander_found_on_Mars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">ESA\u2019s January 2015 announcement<\/a>, Beagle 2 separated from Mars Express on 19 December 2003, six days before its intended landing. Searches for a surface signal by Mars Express and NASA\u2019s Mars Odyssey produced no contact.<\/p>\n<p>That distinction matters when describing a spacecraft that \u201cwent silent.\u201d Beagle 2 did not send a sequence of surface observations and then stop. Its anticipated first communication from the ground never arrived. Controllers had no stream of landing telemetry that could identify the last completed step.<\/p>\n<p>The absence of a transmission did not establish whether Beagle 2 had been destroyed. A working transmitter, a usable antenna, electrical power and the necessary deployment sequence all have to combine before a receiver can hear anything.<\/p>\n<p>A small object in a large search area<\/p>\n<p>NASA\u2019s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter carried the HiRISE camera that eventually supplied the decisive images. The lander was less than two metres across when fully deployed, making the search difficult even for a high-resolution instrument looking down from Mars orbit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/lost-2003-mars-lander-found-by-mars-reconnaissance-orbiter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">JPL\u2019s discovery announcement<\/a> showed features interpreted as the lander and associated landing hardware. The images came from 2014, including a colour observation taken on 15 December. The public announcement followed on 16 January 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Croon, a former member of the Mars Express operations team, helped identify the candidate in orbital imagery. Follow-up analysis involved the camera team and researchers familiar with Beagle 2. The object lay within the expected Isidis Planitia landing area, about five kilometres from its centre.<\/p>\n<p>Location alone was not enough to identify it.<\/p>\n<p>John Bridges and colleagues\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/discovery.ucl.ac.uk\/id\/eprint\/10026075\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">2017 paper in Royal Society Open Science<\/a> assembled evidence from the object\u2019s dimensions, shape and reflective behaviour. A small, multi-lobed feature with unusually strong reflections was a better match for spacecraft hardware than an ordinary patch of surrounding terrain.<\/p>\n<p>The panels also covered the antenna<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/uk-led-beagle-2-lander-found-on-mars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">UK Space Agency\u2019s account<\/a> explained why an incomplete deployment could produce total silence. Beagle 2\u2019s radio antenna was beneath its folded solar panels. All four needed to open fully to expose the antenna for communication.<\/p>\n<p>In the initial interpretation, some panels had opened but the sequence had stopped before completion. This offered a way to reconcile two observations: apparently surviving the landing, yet never delivering the expected signal.<\/p>\n<p>The arrangement linked mechanical deployment to communication. Solar-panel movement did more than increase the area available to collect sunlight. It also cleared the radio\u2019s path. If the antenna remained covered, the lander could be on the surface without a useful way to report its condition.<\/p>\n<p>The images did not reveal the cause of any obstruction, nor did they provide a direct measurement of the radio\u2019s state.<\/p>\n<p>Later modelling tested the apparent shape<\/p>\n<p>In November 2016, the <a href=\"https:\/\/le.ac.uk\/news\/2016\/november\/novel-analysis-technique-helps-leicester-researchers-to-solve-beagle-2-mystery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">University of Leicester described work with De Montfort University<\/a> that compared simulated landers with the real images. Researchers varied the orientation of the spacecraft, the positions of its panels and the angle of sunlight.<\/p>\n<p>They then adjusted those simulated views to resemble the resolution and viewpoint of HiRISE. Comparing reflections across several illumination conditions gave them another way to investigate an object represented by only a small number of pixels.<\/p>\n<p>The work suggested at least three panels had deployed, and possibly all four. That is why a photograph interpreted in 2015 should not be treated as a final mechanical inspection. A bright patch may depend on viewing geometry as well as which surface is exposed.<\/p>\n<p>The analysis strengthened the case for a surviving, substantially deployed lander while leaving uncertainty about precisely what prevented communication.<\/p>\n<p>The science that could not be returned<\/p>\n<p>Beagle 2 had been designed to investigate the chemistry, mineralogy and environment of its landing site. The mission team\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ntrs.nasa.gov\/archive\/nasa\/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov\/20020002105.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">pre-launch scientific description<\/a> outlined cameras, spectrometers and a gas-analysis package, together with equipment intended to obtain surface and subsurface material.<\/p>\n<p>Its search for evidence relevant to life depended on measurements, including chemical composition and isotope ratios. Finding the lander in an orbital image could establish something about its arrival, but could not recover the experiments it was supposed to communicate.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/le.ac.uk\/news\/2023\/december\/beagle-2-talk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">2023 retrospective<\/a>, Leicester distinguished the achievement of reaching Mars from the failure to return surface science.
