THE VENGABUS HAS broken down.<\/p>\n

Or at least that is how P\u00e1raic Kerrigan views the fate of The Traitors\u2019 original band of deceivers, three of whom have now been banished in the space of four round table votes.<\/p>\n

P\u00e1raic became the latest to go last night<\/a> after the faithfuls mounted a near-unanimous case against him, leaving Carla as the last of the original traitors standing.<\/p>\n

And according to P\u00e1raic, the problems started much earlier than his particularly uncomfortable final roundtable.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf traitors are not united from the start, and if fractures emerge that quickly, the wheels of the Vengabus fall apart,\u201d he told reporters today.<\/p>\n

The first wheel may have come loose with the recruitment of Edelle.<\/p>\n

After the original three traitors (P\u00e1raic, Carla and Fionula) were selected, they were immediately tasked with recruiting a fourth member to their ranks.<\/p>\n

P\u00e1raic said the decision was \u201ccontentious\u201d, with the trio eventually having to put it to a vote. He had been \u201cfighting hard\u201d to recruit Laura instead, but Edelle ultimately got the nod.<\/p>\n

It proved to be a short-lived recruitment. Edelle was banished at the very next round table, after Laura led suspicions against her, based partly on the now-infamous fact that Edelle had downed a glass of water<\/a> after the traitors were selected.<\/p>\n

In an awkward twist for P\u00e1raic, the woman he had wanted to recruit had helped expose the woman they chose instead.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019d just got to know each other. We sort of remembered each other\u2019s names, but it was really hard to get a measure on people without conclave,\u201d P\u00e1raic said.<\/p>\n

Edelle\u2019s recruitment and subsequent banishment created a \u201cdent in the traitors\u2019 unity\u201d, he said, adding that he did not believe they ever fully regained Fionula\u2019s trust afterwards.<\/p>\n

Still, P\u00e1raic has no complaints about the people who eventually caught him.<\/p>\n

He described this year\u2019s faithfuls as an \u201cincredible bunch\u201d who are \u201cruthless\u201d when they arrive at the Round Table armed with their evidence.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith their three-point arguments, they are fired and good to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

A very tired traitor<\/p>\n

And there was plenty of evidence against P\u00e1raic last night<\/a>, with perhaps the most damning proof being: the man looked tired.<\/p>\n

Denis constructed an impressively detailed case around P\u00e1raic\u2019s apparent exhaustion, reasoning at one point that \u201cmurdering is a nocturnal activity\u201d.<\/p>\n

So, how much sleep was the nocturnal murderer actually getting?<\/p>\n

P\u00e1raic would only say it was \u201ca bit less sleep\u201d, but said the exhaustion went beyond simply not getting enough rest.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are holding the cup of being a traitor,\u201d P\u00e1raic said.<\/p>\n

Holding that cup for days on end, he explained, eventually begins to take its toll.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t just the physical exhaustion or the bags under his eyes that gave him away, he believes, but his energy and general \u201cvibe\u201d.<\/p>\n

There was, of course, one other small clue.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I stand up here and I\u2019m a trai\u2013,\u201d P\u00e1raic began during the roundtable, before rapidly correcting himself to \u201cfaithful\u201d.<\/p>\n

He knew immediately what he had done.<\/p>\n

P\u00e1raic joked today that \u201cit\u2019s 2026, and I\u2019m happy to revive the Nadine Coyle moment for myself\u201d, referencing the infamous interview for the early 2000\u2032s show Popstars, in which the Girls Aloud singer appeared to forget her own date of birth.<\/p>\n

The Freudian slip was \u201cterrible\u201d, he admitted, but he reckons he was already doomed by that point anyway.<\/p>\n

\u2018Lads, lads, lads\u2019<\/p>\n

Watching the series back has also left P\u00e1raic interested in another dynamic developing in the castle.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, there\u2019s definitely a lads, lads, lads vibe,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

P\u00e1raic said the dynamic was \u201cturning my stomach\u201d towards the end of his time in the game, largely because he felt some of the men were refusing to seriously suspect one another<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He had even tried to use that to his advantage as a traitor by suggesting the pattern of women being murdered pointed towards women carrying out the murders.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, didn\u2019t work for me,\u201d he conceded.<\/p>\n

He is now interested to see how long the alliance between some of the male contestants can survive.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know if the lads, lads, lads will last long,\u201d P\u00e1raic said.<\/p>\n

P\u00e1raic also questioned whether there is a gender dynamic to how emotional reactions are interpreted in the castle, particularly after Aoife became upset in last night\u2019s episode.<\/p>\n

He said he felt her reaction was legitimate but watched as even that emotional moment became another reason for some players to suspect her.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere seems to be that script that women in the game are expected to follow that the guys aren\u2019t meant to follow,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The English teacher<\/p>\n

Alongside lying about being a traitor, P\u00e1raic had also spent his time in Slane Castle telling everyone he was an English teacher.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s actually an assistant professor of communication and information at University College Dublin.<\/p>\n

P\u00e1raic said he initially considered pretending to be a librarian, before deciding even that might sound a little too mysterious.<\/p>\n

His decision to hide his academic career came after watching previous versions of The Traitors, where he said he had seen academics targeted early because of their qualifications.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just wanted to be kind of blending in for the first few days and not bringing attention to myself,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

An English teacher, he reckoned, wouldn\u2019t raise too many questions.<\/p>\n

It worked. For a while, anyway.<\/p>\n

P\u00e1raic said he knew by day two or three that he was unlikely to make it much further than day seven or eight, and by his final roundtable he was determined not to damage Carla\u2019s game on his way out.<\/p>\n

He has no regrets about becoming a traitor either. \u201cI absolutely loved it,\u201d P\u00e1raic said.<\/p>\n

Given another chance, he would choose the cloak all over again.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was quite happy to murder, plot, deceive and get slaughtering,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
