Here&#8217;s why"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-3c3e4b44-a887-11f1-8cc4-194910d6cf83\">A team of researchers just chased a pair of reentering satellites in a private jet to learn about the pollution caused by space debris burning up in Earth&#8217;s atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>The satellites in question were the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Space Agency<\/a>&#8216;s (ESA) <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Space_Safety\/Space_Debris\/Cluster_s_encore_for_reentry_science_a_success\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Space_Safety\/Space_Debris\/Cluster_s_encore_for_reentry_science_a_success\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tango and Samba spacecraft<\/a>, which once formed the Cluster constellation, together with the already de-orbited Rumba and Salsa. The quartet used to study the interaction of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/earths-magnetic-field-explained\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/earths-magnetic-field-explained\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/earths-magnetic-field-explained\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth&#8217;s magnetic field<\/a> with the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22215-solar-wind.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22215-solar-wind.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22215-solar-wind.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar wind<\/a>. Although companies such as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a>, Amazon and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19584-blue-origin-quiet-plans-for-spaceships.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19584-blue-origin-quiet-plans-for-spaceships.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19584-blue-origin-quiet-plans-for-spaceships.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Origin<\/a> want to launch huge numbers of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">satellites<\/a> to space in the next decade \u2014 SpaceX alone plans to loft <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/spacex-wants-to-launch-100-000-starlink-satellites-to-orbit\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/spacex-wants-to-launch-100-000-starlink-satellites-to-orbit\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/spacex-wants-to-launch-100-000-starlink-satellites-to-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">100,000 of its Starlink V3 spacecraft<\/a> \u2014 very little is known about the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-launches-satellite-reentries-air-pollution-concerns\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-launches-satellite-reentries-air-pollution-concerns\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-launches-satellite-reentries-air-pollution-concerns\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">effects of satellite reentries<\/a> on Earth&#8217;s atmosphere. Researchers are also still unsure which spacecraft burn up completely and how many fragments may reach the ground, putting lives and property at risk.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want to understand what happens to these bodies as they fly through the atmosphere, which causes friction and very high temperatures,&#8221; Ji\u0159\u00ed \u0160ilha, CEO of the Slovak company Astros Solutions, and one of the researchers aboard the plane, told Space.com. &#8220;We know that those satellites break up into fragments, which subsequently melt in the atmosphere.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>The researchers chased the reentering spacecraft following exact calculations provided by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Space_Safety\/Space_Debris\/Cluster_s_encore_for_reentry_science_a_success#msdynmkt_trackingcontext=17566978-1cc5-4b86-8ffb-b4d067660000\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Space_Safety\/Space_Debris\/Cluster_s_encore_for_reentry_science_a_success#msdynmkt_trackingcontext=17566978-1cc5-4b86-8ffb-b4d067660000\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ESA controllers<\/a>, who were able to maintain connection with the spacecraft until the very last moment before they plunged into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/TNken9Jsp9ypuc4LimQP5F.jpg\" alt=\"six people inside a private jet, with computer equipment strewn around the cabin\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/TNken9Jsp9ypuc4LimQP5F.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/TNken9Jsp9ypuc4LimQP5F.jpg\" class=\"rounded-[var(--image--border-radius,0)] inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Researchers inside a private jet during a campaign observing the reentry of ESA&#8217;s Cluster Tango satellite on Sept. 1, 2026. (Image credit: Ji\u0159\u00ed \u0160ilha)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-1d66a85a-a88d-11f1-b8ff-45bf00f3bad3\">The satellite reentries, although they occurred during daylight, were visible from aboard the plane even to the naked eye, said \u0160ilha, and created spectacular fireballs that lasted tens of seconds.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vanilla.futurecdn.net\/space\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Bolides and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/meteor-showers-shooting-stars.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/meteor-showers-shooting-stars.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/meteor-showers-shooting-stars.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">meteors<\/a> only last a few seconds or less,&#8221; said \u0160ilha. &#8220;But satellites are slower. They enter the atmosphere at a shallower angle, and the atmosphere slows them down further.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But the researchers were there for science, not for a sky show. And it was a rare opportunity: The Cluster trajectories were so precisely known that the scientists could prepare for them and be at the exact spot at the exact time to witness those explosions from only a couple of hundred miles away.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-7a573d1e-a887-11f1-a3fd-2d782156dd9b\">The aircraft, a small commercial business jet, was packed with 30 cameras and spectrometers fitted with special filters to capture not only how the satellites disintegrated but also detect the spectral signatures of the chemical elements released as their bodies burned up.<\/p>\n<p>            What to read next<\/p>\n<p>Eight scientists were squashed on board the darkened jet operating the instruments through the aircraft&#8217;s six windows as the pilots navigated to the vicinity of the spot where ESA analysts had predicted the breakup would occur.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were flying toward the object, and first it looked like a compact source of light as the material ablated,&#8221; said \u0160ilha. &#8220;At some point, there was a sudden explosion as the satellite disintegrated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The plane allowed the researchers to overcome any clouds that could obscure the view from the ground, and also to bypass the thickest layer of the atmosphere, which would distort the measurements. As the satellites hurtled through the air, slowing down from the mind-boggling speed of 22,370 mph (36,000 kph) at which they hit the upper atmosphere, the jet approached them to within a distance of around 75 miles (120 kilometers).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We begin observing it when it&#8217;s at about 90 kilometers [56 miles] and it stops being visible at about 65 to 70 kilometers [40 to 44 miles],&#8221; \u0160ilha said. &#8220;For about thirty to forty seconds after the explosion, you can observe an interesting structure as all those various fragments ablate in the atmosphere. Then they all either burn up or slow down.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u0160ilha said the cameras captured tens of fragments, in detail that had never been observed before.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-7a573d8c-a887-11f1-88d1-e352720dc959\">The researchers also attempted to trace seven chemical compounds, including titanium, sodium and potassium, which get released as satellites burn up. The team was especially interested in aluminum, which makes up the majority of a satellite body. Aluminum is not naturally present in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth&#8217;s atmosphere<\/a> and most likely forms aluminum oxide during the incineration. The potential presence of aluminum oxide in the atmosphere in higher concentrations worries scientists, as it could potentially <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/megaconstellations-threat-to-ozone-layer-recovery\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/megaconstellations-threat-to-ozone-layer-recovery\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/megaconstellations-threat-to-ozone-layer-recovery\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">trigger ozone depletion<\/a> in the stratosphere.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We tried to measure the aluminum at different altitudes, using specialized filters, which could tell us when this aluminum interacts with the atmosphere,&#8221; said \u0160ilha. &#8220;That&#8217;s when the aluminum oxide likely forms, and that&#8217;s something that has never been observed before. We don&#8217;t know exactly how and in what quantities the aluminum oxide might be forming.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The researchers will now analyze the data to learn exactly what chemical reactions may be occurring during every second of the breakup and burn-up process. The data will help atmospheric physics and chemistry researchers improve their models to further our understanding of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-launches-satellite-reentries-air-pollution-concerns\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-launches-satellite-reentries-air-pollution-concerns\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-launches-satellite-reentries-air-pollution-concerns\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">potential damage<\/a> the growing satellite industry might do to the planet and its climate in the future.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The data will help us validate whether the models agree with reality,&#8221; said \u0160ilha.<\/p>\n<p>The team previously chased the reentry of the first of the four Cluster satellites \u2014 Salsa \u2014 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/europe-salsa-satellite-controlled-reentry-milestone\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/europe-salsa-satellite-controlled-reentry-milestone\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/europe-salsa-satellite-controlled-reentry-milestone\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in September 2024<\/a>.
