{"id":679100,"date":"2026-09-08T20:03:15","date_gmt":"2026-09-08T20:03:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/679100\/"},"modified":"2026-09-08T20:03:15","modified_gmt":"2026-09-08T20:03:15","slug":"hurricane-lowell-brings-threat-of-floods-mudslides-and-tornadoes-to-hawaii-hawaii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/679100\/","title":{"rendered":"Hurricane Lowell brings threat of floods, mudslides and tornadoes to Hawaii | Hawaii"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Damaging winds and heavy rains from Hurricane Lowell were pelting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/hawaii\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hawaii<\/a>\u2019s western islands on Tuesday, bringing the threat of floods, mudslides and tornadoes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The islands of Kauai and Ni\u2019ihau are under a hurricane warning, while Oahu, the state\u2019s most populated island with close to 1 million residents, was under a tropical storm warning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Flooding and mudslides will be the biggest risk through the day, said the National Hurricane Center\u2019s Eric Blake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The center of the storm was passing west of the islands and moving away, but tropical storm-force winds extended nearly 200 miles (320km), the National Hurricane Center said. On Kauai, sustained winds measured just above 50mph (80km\/h) at Lihue airport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Some wind gusts reached 80mph, according to the hurricane center. But the force of the sustained winds had decreased by early Tuesday and the storm was expected to weaken in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Road crews were clearing sand and rocks from a major route along Oahu\u2019s western edge after flood waters topped the highway, north of Honolulu.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/hawaii\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hawaii<\/a> governor, Josh Green, closed schools and government offices on the three islands for Tuesday ahead of the storm.
