These areas are responsible for some of the largest <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/earthquakes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">earthquakes<\/a> on Earth and can produce devastating <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/what-is-a-tsunami-and-what-causes-them\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">tsunamis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sub-text\">Images from around La Guaira, Venezuela show the extent of damage following back-to-back major earthquakes on Wednesday night. The death toll is expected to rise as search and rescue efforts continue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;Earthquakes capture headlines when they happen, but for years beforehand, the fault is quietly accumulating strain,&#8221; lead scientist and UCR geophysicist Gareth Funning said. &#8220;This strain can be measured.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_11\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/how-to-watch-fox-weather-on-tv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Using GPS measurements that track subtle ground movements, the researchers developed an algorithm to identify sections of faults that are locked and storing energy.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">These locked areas, known as asperities, act like patches of friction along a fault.
