{"id":67937,"date":"2025-09-16T17:04:12","date_gmt":"2025-09-16T17:04:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/67937\/"},"modified":"2025-09-16T17:04:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T17:04:12","slug":"kallas-calls-on-germany-to-stop-hindering-eu-diplomacy-in-gaza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/67937\/","title":{"rendered":"Kallas calls on Germany to stop hindering EU diplomacy in Gaza"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>          <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/website\/images\/logos\/logo-euronews-stacked-outlined-72x72-grey-9.svg\" width=\"72\" height=\"72\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n          ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>Germany must come up with \u201cmeasures\u201d and \u201cbring alternatives\u201d to break the EU\u2019s deadlock on Gaza, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2025\/09\/16\/eu-to-propose-suspending-trade-agreement-with-israel-over-gaza\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>exclusive interview<\/strong><\/a> with Euronews.<\/p>\n<p>Kallas spoke as Israel toughened its military campaign in Gaza and launched a ground offensive into Gaza City on Tuesday. \u00a0She also spoke a week after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced during her State of the Union speech that she would\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2025\/09\/10\/von-der-leyen-announces-suspension-of-eu-payments-and-trade-partnership-with-israel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>propose<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0the suspension of &#8220;bilateral support&#8221; with Israel and partially suspend the trade parts of the EU-Israel\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.euronews.com%2Fmy-europe%2F2025%2F06%2F20%2Feu-review-indicates-israel-breached-human-rights-in-gaza&amp;data=05%7C02%7Csophie.claudet%40euronews.com%7Cc11dad41249d4fceaad708ddf513ec75%7Ce59fa28a32ed49aca5a09c46118cfecf%7C0%7C0%7C638936188139629687%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=Htg%2FtJpAYEGOJL7%2Bza%2B1as2Wz0v1pvt%2FXjrPirYEoyg%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\"><strong>association agreement<\/strong><\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>To make good on von der Leyen\u2019s announcement, Kallas told Euronews that the commission would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2025\/09\/16\/eu-to-propose-suspending-trade-agreement-with-israel-over-gaza\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>propose<\/strong><\/a> on Wednesday reimposing\u00a0duties on Israeli goods in response to the war in Gaza and ongoing violations in the West Bank.<\/p>\n<p>But suspending trade with Israel would require a qualified majority vote, and Germany leads the front of European countries opposing sanctions on the Jewish state, owing to the role it played in the Holocaust.<\/p>\n<p>Asked how she would convince the German government to slap duties on Israel, Kallas said, \u201cIf you agree on the diagnosis that the situation is extremely grave, the situation is disastrous and untenable, then the question is what do we do about this?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you don&#8217;t support these measures, then what measures can you support?
