AT&T signed an agreement<\/a> with Amazon on Tuesday to deliver satellite internet to business customers, making AT&T the first U.S. telecom provider to use connectivity from Amazon’s Leo low-Earth-orbit satellite division. <\/p>\n

“Customers have no shortage of connectivity options. What enterprise and public sector customers need is a connectivity platform that delivers greater reliability,” Shawn Hakl, AT&T Business’s head of product, said in a company statement. <\/p>\n

Amazon Leo is still in the early stages of development. Of Amazon’s 392 satellites currently in space, astronomer Jonathan McDowell’s data shows that just 315 have reached the correct operational orbit. Wedbush Securities has estimated that Amazon needs 578 satellites in orbit to begin commercial services, according to MarketWatch. Amazon last launched satellites in July and has future missions booked with United Launch Alliance and others. <\/p>\n

SpaceX’s Starlink, by contrast, has amassed 11,124 working satellites, per McDowell’s figures. SpaceX COO Gwynne Shotwell reported to investors last month that Starlink’s enterprise and government segment brought in $1.8 billion during the June quarter, more than double its total from the same period a year ago. <\/p>\n

Amazon began offering enterprise previews for Leo in November and plans to begin commercial service this year. It has secured partnerships with Delta Air Lines and JetBlue Airways. Chris Weber, an executive at Amazon Leo, said in a statement Tuesday that the service is designed to meet the demands of enterprise, public sector, and government customers. <\/p>\n

Regulators have authorized Amazon to build out a 3,232-satellite constellation and launch an additional 4,500 satellites. The company filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission in July to launch up to 5,105 additional satellites<\/a> designed to deliver connectivity directly to smartphones and other mobile devices, with deployment beginning in 2028. That filing also noted an existing agreement with Apple to power satellite features on supported iPhone and Apple Watch models. <\/p>\n

Amazon is also set to take control of Globalstar’s satellites following a deal announced in April that valued the satellite communications company at $11.57 billion, a transaction expected to close in 2027. <\/p>\n
