{"id":679854,"date":"2026-09-09T06:33:12","date_gmt":"2026-09-09T06:33:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/679854\/"},"modified":"2026-09-09T06:33:12","modified_gmt":"2026-09-09T06:33:12","slug":"flights-returning-to-normal-after-uk-technical-error","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/679854\/","title":{"rendered":"Flights returning to normal after UK technical error"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Flight schedules are returning to normal following disruption to dozens of incoming and outgoing flights at Cork, Dublin and Shannon airports yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The disruption was caused by a technical error affecting air traffic control in the UK where nearly 1,100 flights were cancelled, affecting tens of thousands of passengers.<\/p>\n<p>The UK&#8217;s air traffic control provider, NATS, said the problem was resolved.<\/p>\n<p>The operator of Dublin Airport, daa, said 73 flights were cancelled yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Dublin Airport said it expected close to a full schedule of flights to operate today but that the potential for some delays remained because of a knock-on effect from the disruption yesterday. Intending passengers are advised to check their airline&#8217;s website for updates.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/Number of Irish flights cancelled due to UK air traffic control issue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Airlines in the UK are continuing to deal with the knock-on impacts of yesterday&#8217;s technical issue<\/a> with some disruption expected to affect airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Stansted.<\/p>\n<p>The head of an air traffic control provider in the UK is due to speak to Britain&#8217;s Transport Secretary regarding the technical issue.<\/p>\n<p>Flight monitoring website Flightradar24 said 1,300 flights had been cancelled to and from UK airports yesterday after a system issue hit NATS, which provides air traffic control services to 15 UK airports.<\/p>\n<p>The website added that 177 flights were cancelled early today, nearly all of which were at Heathrow Airport.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Those wishing to travel sleep on the floor at Gatwick Airport.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/0024f9b7-614.jpg\"\/><br \/>\nPeople impacted by the flight disruption sleep on the floor in Gatwick Airport<\/p>\n<p>Tens of thousands of passengers were caught up in the chaos yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>NATS Chief Executive Officer Martin Rolfe said he &#8220;always accept(s) full responsibility&#8221; when asked if he was considering his position after the incident.<\/p>\n<p>He told Sky News: &#8220;I am the CEO of a piece of critical infrastructure, so it is my job to take responsibility for that.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What I absolutely take responsibility for is keeping people safe and delivering the best service we possibly can on a day like today.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You will understand my focus is entirely about how we actually resolve this issue, get things back to normal, help our airlines, our airport customers and the travelling public.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Travel journalist Simon Calder said the knock-on effects today are &#8220;going to be horrible&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He told Sky News: &#8220;There are going to be dozens of cancellations in the morning of flights coming into Heathrow because, basically, the flights didn&#8217;t go out tonight.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Passengers at Gatwick Airport's South Terminal in Crawley, West Sussex, after flights were cancelled\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/0024f95a-614.jpg\"\/><br \/>\nPassengers waiting at Gatwick Airport&#8217;s south terminal after the cancellations<\/p>\n<p>Ryanair said more than 65,000 of its passengers had been disrupted and it had cancelled more than 50 scheduled flights.<\/p>\n<p>British Airways (BA) said it was forced to cancel or divert more than 100 flights yesterday which had impacted &#8220;tens of thousands of customers&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Rolfe has been under fire from Wizz Air and Ryanair after the latest issue which saw some passengers trapped on planes on runways for hours.<\/p>\n<p>Ryanair&#8217;s Chief Operating Officer Neal McMahon called on Mr Rolfe to resign.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;How many more failures do passengers have to suffer before overpaid failure NATS CEO Martin Rolfe accepts responsibility for his repeated mismanagement and resigns?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Over three years after NATS&#8217; catastrophic 2023 system meltdown, it&#8217;s clear that nothing has changed, with UK passengers once again suffering avoidable ATC (air traffic control) delays of up to eight hours today due a critical NATS ATC system failing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\" Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander arrives at Downing Street \" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/0024bb24-614.jpg\"\/><br \/>\nUK Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander is set to speak with NATS Chief Executive Officer<\/p>\n<p>Last night, NATS apologised for the disruption caused and said on X: &#8220;Work is continuing to assist airlines and airports recover from today&#8217;s disruption.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This has been a very complex recovery and has created difficulties for the whole aviation network, from which it will take time to recover.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>UK Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander is set to speak with Mr Rolfe before she addresses MPs in the House of Commons for the second reading of the Civil Aviation Bill.<\/p>\n<p>Among the thousands facing disruption yesterday was Josie Donoghue, who had to get off her flight to Ireland after spending three hours on the runway at Gatwick.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Donoghue said getting through the airport &#8220;was like trying to get out of Alcatraz&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were trapped in there.
