That changed after he spent four months in an ICU, an experience that made him rethink his belief that constantly working was part of being an entrepreneur.A Bengaluru-based entrepreneur has shared how spending four months in an ICU changed his approach to work, rest and the pressures of running a business. In a post on LinkedIn, Sivaram Briyas, Co-Founder of MillD and Founder of Briyas, recalled a time when he treated Sundays as little more than a slower version of a working day. He said he would answer calls, visit his factory and often spend hours there despite telling his family he would only be away for a few minutes.“For most of my career, Sunday was just a slower Monday,” Briyas said, adding that he took some pride in constantly being available because he believed entrepreneurs were not supposed to take days off. That mindset changed after he spent four months in an ICU. “Then I spent four months in an ICU, and I got all my off days at once,” Briyas said.During his recovery, doctors explained to him that the body does not become stronger while it is exerting itself, but during the periods of rest that follow. Briyas said the idea made him reconsider how he approached his own work.“The surgery is the damage. The healing happens in between, in the sleeping, the eating, the waiting,” he wrote.Briyas then drew a parallel between physical recovery and running a business, saying that he had spent decades in the food industry without applying the same principle outside a hospital. In his opinion, important business ideas often emerge away from the workplace rather than during meetings or while analysing dashboards. A walk after a meeting can lead to better thinking, while observing one’s family during a Sunday lunch can reveal insights into how customers actually eat.“The greatest leaps need spaces,” he said. While his approach to rest has changed, Briyas said he has not stopped working hard. He described himself as working “probably harder than before,” but said there was now less time and more purpose behind his efforts.Sivaram Briyas also said he now tries to protect his Sundays, not because he believes he has earned the right to rest, but because he sees rest as an essential part of completing work.“There are still days where something urgent might come up, but that is not part of the work schedule any more,” he said.

For years, a Bengaluru entrepreneur treated Sundays as another workday.
