A RESEARCHER WITH the leading artificial intelligence firm Anthropic has left the company due to concerns that the technology \u201ccould kill us all by the end of the decade\u201d.<\/p>\n

In a post on social media platform X, which has amassed over 440,000 likes and over 65 million views, Jacob Coxon said he resigned from Anthropic because both it and its rival OpenAI are \u201cracing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives\u201d.<\/p>\n

Coxon previously worked with OpenAI and left to join Anthropic earlier this year.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s understood that he left OpenAI for Anthropic because he deemed it to be more cautious in its AI development.<\/p>\n

However, in his post on X, Coxon said \u201cneither company is acting responsibly\u201d.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cDo not underestimate the power of this technology.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese will soon be superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionise any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Coxon warned that the \u201cpeople building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not a marketing stunt,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Coxon said many executives \u201ccouch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible\u201d but \u201cexpress fear privately\u201d.<\/p>\n

He noted that many people will question why those working in leading AI companies still build these models if they \u201ctruly believe\u201d that it could kill us all.<\/p>\n

He said those in Anthropic understand the risk but that many who work in OpenAI \u201chave not deeply internalised the civilisations stakes\u201d.<\/p>\n

Therefore, Coxon said those in Anthropic are \u201clocked in a race to get there first \u2013 they believe no one else will act responsibly, so they must do it themselves, despite the risk\u201d.<\/p>\n

However, he said that \u201caccepting this race and entering the \u2018endgame\u2019 is a hubristic gamble that should not be launched\u201d.<\/p>\n

While Coxon noted that \u201cwarning shots like the Hugging Face attack have made pacing agreements between US labs more viable\u201d, he expressed concern about whether such agreements could be reached globally.<\/p>\n

In mid-July, OpenAI models escaped their confined testing environment and gained access to the internet, where they found and attacked Hugging Face, a site AI developers use to store and share models and data sets.<\/p>\n

The incident raised alarm about the dangers of AI systems acting autonomously and breaking guardrails set by human programmers to prevent safety violations.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Coxon urged other lab researchers within AI to \u201cconsider what the next few years will actually feel like\u201d.<\/p>\n

Anthropic\u2019s safety executive Evan Hubinger backed up Coxon on X and said \u201cwe really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans\u201d.<\/p>\n

Hubinger even said there is a more than 10% chance that this could happen within the next decade.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe Anthropic is trying its best,\u201d said Hubinger, \u201cbut we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Hubinger said that the \u201crisk from present models is low\u201d, he added that he is \u201cworried about superintelligence arising from recursive self-improvement\u201d, which is \u201chappening faster than we thought\u201d.<\/p>\n

Coxon had called for a \u201ctemporary ban on improving model capabilities\u201d in his post on X.<\/p>\n

In February, Anthropic removed a pledge from its safety charter to halt the development of its models if it failed to control their risks.<\/p>\n

It argued that if it unilaterally paused its work, its less cautious rivals would dominate the industry, making it less safe overall.<\/p>\n
