Then, things got even wilder as the manager threatened the healthcare professional with HR intervention. On TikTok, @big_leeskii gave her followers the story of how she got removed from her post and discovered that her coworker “was eavesdropping” on a private conversation. Before any further action was taken, Lee Monet clocked out and left during the ICU shift she was on.

On the screen, it says that this video was “story time,” and that promise was kept. Lee Monet explained how the “eavesdropping” conversation was centered around possible union activity. The other nurse who reported her said that Lee was making her feel “unsafe.” The TikTok poster explained how that moment showed her the writing was on the wall for her current employment. When the manager decided to invoke the Human Resources department, Lee hopped right into action.

“Being a Black nurse is an anomaly in its own right. But, being an ICU Black nurse is a whole different spectrum,” she said in the video. “And, a lot of times you will run into a situation where you know that the only option is to exit stage left.” A lot of the discussion in the comments centers on whether or right this was the right decision. But, only Lee can make that decision for herself. When she saw those red flags rise up, that was enough to hit the doors and not look back.

Another layer to the Black nurse HR saga

Over the course of Lee’s story, it becomes clear that this other nurse heard the TikToker joking with another coworker. Lee argues that it was joking about the prospect of a union. But, the other nurse reportedly heard something that tipped her scales. Unfortunately for the hospital, the manager’s behavior had a similar effect on Lee. Because she felt like this was a recognizable pattern of mistreatment.

As one commenter named Kaiyah asked, “I was told at my yearly review to be more “friendly” to my colleagues. How about they be more friendly and welcoming to me??? Why do we always bear the responsibility to make others feel comfortable?” It’s a question worth wondering, but Lee sat up and crafted a quick solution that solved the issue. However, the hospital suffered because of the management confrontation.

Lee explained, “I said, don’t you worry about it. I will handle that. And, I exited her office, walked to the nursing station, and sat down at an available computer. I opened up my company email, c.c.-d and b.c.c.-d all my personal emails. Then, I emailed her and H. R together, and let them know, effective immediately, I will be vacating this said position that you begged me to take. Rushed me off of orientation, because you were so short on experienced nurses. And the reason why is because I don’t feel safe here as a Black woman in this department.”

“And if you want to improve on said behavior, these are a list of things that I would suggest in the future,” she added. “I finished my patient load, clocked out, and those people never saw me again. If she thought she was short nurses, she’s gonna be shorter now.”

Have a tip we should know? [email protected]

A hospital pulled one Black ICU nurse from her patients after receiving a complaint from another nurse.
