But, following new observations, it is no longer considered an imminent threat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The space rock, dubbed <a href=\"https:\/\/ssd.jpl.nasa.gov\/tools\/sbdb_lookup.html#\/?sstr=2025%20FA22&amp;view=OPC\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:2025 FA22;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">2025 FA22<\/a>, is somewhere between 427 and 951 feet (130 and 290 meters) across, making it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/lifestyle\/many-city-killer-asteroids-narrowly-120000813.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:large enough to wipe out a major city;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">large enough to wipe out a major city<\/a> were it to collide with Earth. It will reach its minimum distance to us in the early hours of Thursday (Sept. 18), coming within 520,000 miles (835,000 kilometers) of our planet \u2014 just over twice as far away from us as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/moon-news-features-articles-170026689.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:the moon;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a> \u2014 and will be traveling at around 24,000 mph (38,600 km\/h).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">2025 FA22 was initially discovered in March by the Pan-STARRS 2 telescope in Hawaii. The asteroid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wionews.com\/science-tech\/asteroid-2025-fa22-hurtling-towards-earth-and-can-crash-in-2089-9046455\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:quickly made headlines;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">quickly made headlines<\/a> when it was revealed that it has a 0.01% chance of hitting Earth when it returns for another close flyby on Sept. 23, 2089. (This story was somewhat overshadowed by fellow asteroid 2024 YR4, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/thats-zero-folks-asteroid-2024-155022665.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:briefly predicted to have a much higher chance of impacting our planet in 2032;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">briefly predicted to have a much higher chance of impacting our planet in 2032<\/a> at around the same time 2025 FA22 was first spotted.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Despite the low odds of a collision, space agencies took the threat of 2025 FA22 seriously, and the asteroid was briefly bumped to the top spot on ESA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/neo.ssa.esa.int\/risk-list\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Risk List;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Risk List<\/a>, which monitors all near-Earth objects predicted to have a non-zero chance of impacting our planet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;However, high-priority follow-up observations soon allowed astronomers to refine the asteroid\u2019s trajectory and rule out any impact risk,&#8221; according to a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA_Multimedia\/Images\/2025\/09\/Close_approach_of_asteroid_2025_FA22\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:ESA statement;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">ESA statement<\/a>.
