{"id":69554,"date":"2025-09-17T12:31:12","date_gmt":"2025-09-17T12:31:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/69554\/"},"modified":"2025-09-17T12:31:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-17T12:31:12","slug":"roo-dhissou-builds-cob-house-inside-va-using-mud-from-hs2-excavation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/69554\/","title":{"rendered":"Roo Dhissou builds cob house inside V&#038;A using mud from HS2 excavation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Artist Roo Dhissou and UK studio Intervention Architecture have designed Heal, Home, Hmm, a modular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/pavilions-tag\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pavilion<\/a> made using Punjabi mud building techniques, which is on display at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/va\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">V&amp;A<\/a> as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/london-design-festival\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">London Design Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rookaurdhissou.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dhissou<\/a> drew on traditional building techniques when designing the pavilion, set at the bottom of one of the museum&#8217;s curved staircases.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2248137 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/heal-home-hmm-roo-dhissou-Intervention-Architecture_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x563.jpg\" alt=\"Cob house at the V&amp;A\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1562\"  \/>Heal, Home, Hmm is on display at the V&amp;A<\/p>\n<p>She believes that going back to these vernacular ways of building could make British homes not just more sustainable but also more resistant to mould, as the porous mud can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/future\/article\/20220705-the-sustainable-cities-made-from-mud\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">absorb and release excess moisture from the air<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s moisture in the walls \u2013 that&#8217;s why we have a lot of mould problems,&#8221; Dhissou explained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Previously, in many different countries, like India, parts of Africa and even in the UK, we used natural building materials: clay, straw, hemp, wattle and daub,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;[But] we&#8217;ve moved away from those practices to extractive practices.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2248136 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/heal-home-hmm-roo-dhissou-Intervention-Architecture_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x591.jpg\" alt=\"Mud and wood walls at V&amp;A pavilion\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1641\"  \/>It was built using clay from HS2 sites<\/p>\n<p>Dhissou&#8217;s Heal, Home, Hmm house, co-designed with <a href=\"https:\/\/interventionarchitecture.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Intervention Architecture<\/a>, was made using local mud sourced from the construction sites of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/hs2\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">High Speed Two<\/a> (HS2) railway in London.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been rescued and reclaimed,&#8221; Dhissou said. &#8220;It would have gone to landfill, and we&#8217;ve used it to show how you can use natural building materials to build again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s more of a proposition, thinking about care, access and healthcare and the building industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/07\/24\/cob-mainstream-building-material\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/sq-cobbauge-house-hudson-architects-cob-uk_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"CobBauge House in Norfolk by Hudson Architects\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> How to make cob a mainstream building material\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Heal, Home, Hmm house has a wooden frame and panels made from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/cob\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cob<\/a>. Arched doorways add a decorative touch, while the pavilion&#8217;s flat roof can be used as a terrace.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I used sand, straw, hemp and clay,&#8221; Dhissou told Dezeen of constructing the pavilion. &#8220;It&#8217;s a one-part equal mixture, a cob building.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2248141 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/heal-home-hmm-roo-dhissou-Intervention-Architecture_dezeen_2364_col_8-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"Interior of Heal, Home, Hmm house\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The house has wooden archways and cob walls<\/p>\n<p>The inspiration for the design came from the artist&#8217;s childhood home.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I grew up in a house in Punjab that had some cob clay walls left over, though the majority were changed into concrete,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I really wanted to do something that was inspired by the house that I grew up in.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, Dhissou gave the traditional cob material a modern update for her V&amp;A pavilion, which was especially commissioned for the London Design Festival.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Essentially, [the house] is modular, it&#8217;s flat pack,&#8221; she explained. &#8220;So ancient techniques meet flat pack and modulation in the 21st century, bringing those two design practices together for thinking about ways in which we might live in the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2248181 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/heal-home-hmm-roo-dhissou-Intervention-Architecture_dezeen_2364_col_31-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"View of cob house from above\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>It is on show as part of the London Design Festival<\/p>\n<p>Cob construction has been in the spotlight recently.
