Here, she explains why it&#8217;s not just a &#8220;female design show&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The designer&#8217;s debut show at the festival, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/eventsguide\/2025\/09\/soft-world-sharp-edges-ldf-2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Soft World, Sharp Edges<\/a>, takes over two interconnected rooms inside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/thelavery\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Lavery<\/a> \u2013 a historic Georgian townhouse that forms part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bromptondesigndistrict.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brompton Design District<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As well as launching her own pieces, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/charlottetaylr\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Taylor<\/a> has brought together selected works by 36 international designers staged as a domestic scene strewn with books, ashtrays and glittery cigarettes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2249031 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/charlotte-taylor-soft-world-sharp-edges-london-design-festival-2025_dezeen_2364_col_9-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Soft World, Sharp Edges by Charlotte Taylor\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>Soft World, Sharp Edges by Charlotte Taylor is on display at The Lavery<\/p>\n<p>All of the designers in Taylor&#8217;s exhibition are women \u2013 a fact that she acknowledges to be as crucial as it is irrelevant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When you say it&#8217;s a female design show, it kind of defeats the purpose of doing it,&#8221; she told Dezeen. &#8220;And it feels negative in a way because you want female design to stand for itself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Taylor explained that she did not set out to do an &#8220;all women&#8221; show.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2249030 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/charlotte-taylor-soft-world-sharp-edges-london-design-festival-2025_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Charlotte Taylor exhibition\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>The exhibition features works by 37 designers<\/p>\n<p>Rather, she was looking for pieces that piqued her interest, which became a list of predominantly women designers by chance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wasn&#8217;t looking specifically for women, it just came very naturally because there is such a wealth of incredible design,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I really felt like this would be a great opportunity to spotlight purely female designers. I still don&#8217;t feel like it&#8217;s done that much, which is a huge shame.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2249032 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/charlotte-taylor-soft-world-sharp-edges-london-design-festival-2025_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Ceiling hanging\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Mo Tong Yang is showing a decorative ceiling hanging<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/eventsguide\/2025\/09\/soft-world-sharp-edges-ldf-2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Soft World, Sharp Edges<\/a> is anchored by a bespoke bed \u2013 the first created by Taylor&#8217;s studio \u2013 made from a duo of mild, rolled stainless steel platforms and topped with rumpled bedsheets.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been very interested in domestic space, so that drew me straight away to the bedroom,&#8221; she explained. &#8220;It feels like the most intimate and vulnerable space in the home,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>The bed features a slit on its side that a removable mirror or a television on stilts can slot into. Taylor&#8217;s studio is currently working on developing a lamp and a side table as additional attachments.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2249033 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/charlotte-taylor-soft-world-sharp-edges-london-design-festival-2025_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Table lamp\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>Yoonjeong Lee&#8217;s sculptural table lamp features in the curation<\/p>\n<p>Adaptable furniture is a theme that runs throughout the exhibition, which will change in appearance throughout its run at The Lavery as Taylor rearranges its contents like a real home.<\/p>\n<p>Among the pieces on show is a sculptural table lamp by South Korean designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/yoonjeonglee_studio\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Yoonjeong Lee<\/a>, crowned by a foldable paper shade that&#8217;s held in place with only a perfectly sharpened pencil.<\/p>\n<p>Rotterdam-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/forever.studio\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Forever Studio<\/a> contributed a rectilinear sconce lamp covered with a translucent resin plate that can be removed from its aluminium base and replaced with a different colour.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2249034 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/charlotte-taylor-soft-world-sharp-edges-london-design-festival-2025_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Stool by Cara Campos\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Cara Campos has made a stool from bent bike parts<\/p>\n<p>In another corner, British designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ameliastevens_design\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amelia Stevens<\/a>&#8216;s sleek metal ashtray was placed atop an angular table by Irish designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/cara_____________\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cara Campos<\/a> made from bent bike parts. Close by, a silvery stool by French interior architect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/_pauline.leprince\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pauline Leprince<\/a> features a mirrored component that allows users to use the seat as an alternative dressing table.<\/p>\n<p>True to the show&#8217;s name, its denser materials are balanced by softer pieces, including a decorative textile by London-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mo___tong\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mo Tong Yang<\/a>. Suspended from the ceiling, the work is made from a kite-shaped cut of Chinese linen embellished with hand-sewn dragonflies.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2249035 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/charlotte-taylor-soft-world-sharp-edges-london-design-festival-2025_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Charlotte Taylor exhibition\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>All of the designers in Taylor&#8217;s show are women<\/p>\n<p>Taylor also noted a &#8220;queer undertone&#8221; in the exhibition, as seen in a selection of old Hollywood noir films curated by Spanish writer and filmmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/elenagallen.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elena Gallen<\/a>, which will play throughout the exhibition with sound design by Kaifeng-born <a href=\"https:\/\/221a.ca\/project\/yu-su\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Yu Su<\/a> and define various &#8220;acts&#8221; staged across the show.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not communicated [in the exhibition], but to have six or seven queer female designers in one show is quite uncommon, I think,&#8221; she considered.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Some people will really pick up on that and feel represented, or learn, and for other people it might go completely over their head, and that&#8217;s fine. They might like a chair.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2249039 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/charlotte-taylor-soft-world-sharp-edges-london-design-festival-2025_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Lighting curated by Charlotte Taylor\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Lighting plays a key role<\/p>\n<p>Taylor said she aims to incorporate &#8220;all the senses in a space&#8221;. This is reflected in the shifting layout of the show \u2013 a technique she trialled during Copenhagen&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/3-days-of-design\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">3 Days of Design<\/a> this summer, where she slept, ate and hosted friends within her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/07\/01\/charlotte-taylor-home-from-home-3-days-of-design\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Home from Home installation<\/a> during the design week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think that&#8217;s what really takes the experience to another level,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It can be things you don&#8217;t necessarily notice, but leave you feeling like you had a real, whole experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2023\/08\/17\/charlotte-taylor-architecture-3d-digital-design-interview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/charlotte-taylor-architecture-3d-digitial-design-interview_dezeen_2364_col_4-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Designer Charlotte Taylor in her apartment\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> &#8220;Not having architectural education makes you find different solutions&#8221; says Charlotte Taylor\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Taylor hopes that her <a href=\"https:\/\/londondesignfestival.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">London Design Festival<\/a> debut will serve as a curated index of some of the many women designers emerging today, but in a subtle and eclectic format.<\/p>\n<p>Only a handful of the participating designers are represented by existing galleries \u2013 a testament to the fact that Taylor uses Instagram as a tool to seek out new voices.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Instagram is a lot of people&#8217;s portfolios and their work mainly exists there, so I think it&#8217;s a great way to cover designers,&#8221; the curator explained, acknowledging that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studiocharlottetaylor.com\/?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAafcxZeUmN3IpWurkM0zWUCbgy8b1E48Fuu35FiD4g5x4gDuKoUHmH_YNoTOVQ_aem_HbTIfmW59oxs2FSKlz-bNA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">her own website<\/a> has been a mere landing page with links to her social media for the past five years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s also a huge time drain,&#8221; she joked, referencing her meticulous folders for images of everything from chairs to door handles.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2249036 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/charlotte-taylor-soft-world-sharp-edges-london-design-festival-2025_dezeen_2364_col_7-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Charlotte Taylor bed\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The layout will evolve throughout the exhibition<\/p>\n<p>Soft World, Sharp Edges responds to Brompton Design District&#8217;s overall theme of A Softer World, set by gallerist Alex Tieghi-Walker, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/09\/11\/alex-tieghi-walker-brompton-design-district-interview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who has succeeded Jane Withers<\/a> after her 18-year stint as the district&#8217;s curator.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Female design is often marked as very delicate and soft,&#8221; Taylor explained. &#8220;But I think there&#8217;s a lot of work that has sharp edges and a sense of humour and is quite political.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So I wanted to have something that seems soft and intimate, but with a lot of underlying tones within it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The photography is by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andystagg.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Studio Stagg<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/eventsguide\/2025\/09\/soft-world-sharp-edges-ldf-2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Soft World, Sharp Edges<\/a> takes place from 17 to 21 September 2025 at Studio 4.2.A, The Lavery, 4 Cromwell Place, London SW7 2JE, UK.
