Nvidia <\/a>has agreed to invest $5 billion (\u20ac4.2 billion) in its struggling rival Intel <\/a>as part of a deal to develop new chips for PCs and data centres, the latest reordering of the tech industry spurred by artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n

Intel\u2019s shares surged 29 per cent in premarket trading on the Thursday announcement, which unites two of Silicon Valley\u2019s longest-running competitors.<\/p>\n

The deal comes a month after the US government agreed to take a 10 per cent stake in Intel, as Donald Trump\u2019s administration looks to secure the future of American chip manufacturing.<\/p>\n

However, the pair\u2019s announcement makes no reference to Nvidia using Intel\u2019s foundry to produce its chips.<\/p>\n

Intel, which has struggled to gain a foothold in the booming AI server market, lost its crown as the world\u2019s most valuable chipmaker to Nvidia in 2020.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, Jensen Huang<\/a>, Nvidia\u2019s chief executive, hailed a \u201chistoric collaboration\u201d and \u201ca fusion of two world-class platforms\u201d, combining its graphics processing units, which dominate the market for AI infrastructure, with Intel\u2019s general-purpose chips.<\/p>\n

\u201cTogether, we will expand our ecosystems and lay the foundation for the next era of computing,\u201d Mr Huang said.<\/p>\n

Nvidia will buy $5 billion worth Intel stock at $23.28 per share. In premarket trading, Intel\u2019s shares rose to $31.97, their highest level since July last year. Nvidia\u2019s own shares rose 3 per cent.<\/p>\n

Under the new agreement, Intel will build custom central processing units for Nvidia to build into its AI platforms for data centres, as well as a separate project to develop PC chips.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe appreciate the confidence Jensen and the Nvidia team have placed in us with their investment and look forward to the work ahead as we innovate for customers and grow our business,\u201d said Intel chief executive Lip-Bu Tan<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Shares in Arm<\/a>, Nvidia\u2019s current partner on CPUs, were down 5 per cent in premarket trading. Last month, Japan-based SoftBank, Arm\u2019s majority owner, said it would purchase $2 billion worth of Intel shares.<\/p>\n
