Every chorus is belted out by tens of thousands of fans. People are hugging strangers. At least one grown man is crying. Again and again he jumps to his feet and shouts out the name of the group\u2019s most talismanic member. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">That name begins with \u201cL\u201d, but it isn\u2019t Liam Gallagher, and this is not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/music\/review\/2025\/08\/16\/oasis-at-croke-park-hello-hello-its-good-to-be-back-liam-gallagher-sings-to-82000-jubilant-air-punching-fans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/music\/review\/2025\/08\/16\/oasis-at-croke-park-hello-hello-its-good-to-be-back-liam-gallagher-sings-to-82000-jubilant-air-punching-fans\/\">Oasis at Croke Park<\/a>. While the Britpop brawlers are preparing to rock Dublin, across the Irish Sea in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/london\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/london\/\">London<\/a> the K-pop band <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/blackpink\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/blackpink\/\">Blackpink<\/a> are making history as the first Korean girl group to headline Wembley Stadium, where they\u2019re playing on Friday and Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">I\u2019m here with my daughter, and judging by the Blackpink merch on parade in the departure lounge at Heathrow a few days later, we are not the only Irish people making the trip.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/music\/review\/2025\/08\/16\/oasis-at-croke-park-hello-hello-its-good-to-be-back-liam-gallagher-sings-to-82000-jubilant-air-punching-fans\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oasis at Croke Park: A jubilant, air-punching night delivers the nostalgia we all came forOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Blackpink are about as big as a pop group can be in 2025, but for those not au fait with their bulldozing mash-up of pop and rap, they remain obscure. When I told a few people I was skipping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oasis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oasis\/\">Oasis<\/a> to go to Blackpink, the response was along the lines of \u201cWho?\u201d, which is not something typically heard about a group with 40 billion streams and more than 20 million album sales.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Blackpink: the band performed at Wembley Stadium, in London, on Friday and Saturday. That includes a guy in his 30s seated beside us, who spends most of the two-and-a-half-hour concert on his feet, roaring \u201cLissaaaaaa!\u201d in the direction of Lalisa Manobal, aka the singer and rapper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/music\/review\/2025\/03\/06\/lisa-alter-ego-review-blackpink-superstars-solo-debut-is-a-clumsy-lurch-towards-pop-maximalism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/music\/review\/2025\/03\/06\/lisa-alter-ego-review-blackpink-superstars-solo-debut-is-a-clumsy-lurch-towards-pop-maximalism\/\">Lisa<\/a>. If you think take-no-prisoners pop is one of 21st-century humanity\u2019s great achievements, it\u2019s irresistible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Blending East Asian and western influences, songs such as Kill This Love and How You Like That cheerily pummel the listener into submission. They\u2019re like mini pop operas, splicing hip-hop and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/charli-xcx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/charli-xcx\/\">Charli XCX<\/a>-style hyperpop and conjuring the zesty punch of a thumping Bollywood soundtrack and the pulsating energy of the best production-line chart music.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Blackpink: the band performed at Wembley Stadium, in London, on Friday and Saturday. Photograph: YG Entertainment <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Unlike Oasis, this is also a band of equals: it may be Lisa (recently seen playing a maid in the third season of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/tv-radio\/2025\/02\/17\/the-white-lotus-review-season-three-has-its-finger-on-the-pulse-to-an-almost-excruciating-degree\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/tv-radio\/2025\/02\/17\/the-white-lotus-review-season-three-has-its-finger-on-the-pulse-to-an-almost-excruciating-degree\/\">The White Lotus<\/a>) who has the guy next to us on his feet, but the band are fuelled by the interplay between Manobal and her bandmates Jennie, Jisoo and Ros\u00e9 (who collaborated with Bruno Mars on the irresistible APT).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There are some surprises, too: at one point Ros\u00e9 is filmed shuffling along the tunnel beneath the ramp, where she bumps into the singer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fka-twigs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fka-twigs\/\">FKA Twigs<\/a>, who seems to be imprisoned there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/music\/2025\/08\/18\/oasis-weekend-in-pictures-liam-and-noel-gallagher-gave-fans-two-joyous-gigs\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oasis weekend in pictures: Liam and Noel Gallagher gave fans two joyous gigsOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The exuberant response to the concert must also be seen in the context of the popularity of KPop Demon Hunters, the Netflix cartoon about a Blackpink-style group fighting demons \u2013 it\u2019s a pretty literal title \u2013 that is on course to be the year\u2019s most-watched animated series. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Above all, though, it\u2019s the sheer energy that is most striking, especially during Jump, their house banger, a tune so great that Blackpink perform it twice. Give me two and a half hours of future-facing cyberpop over Oasis and their boozy, cash-grab nostalgia any day of the week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The stadium is packed, and the audience is having the night of its life.
