Image \u2013 Getty: Nicola Ferrari<\/p>\n<p>By Porter Anderson, Editor-in-Chief | <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/porter_anderson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" shape=\"rect\">@Porter_Anderson<\/a><\/p>\n<p>An \u2018Open and Transparent Negotiation Process\u2019<br \/>\nThe United Kingdom\u2019s\u00a0Cambridge University Press and the Munich-based Max Planck Society announced on Thursday (September 18) that they\u2019ve collaborated to develop a new book-sales agreement that combines evidence-based acquisition and open-access funding.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-178235 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Cambridge-University-Press-horizontal-logo-lined-ftw-300x102.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"102\"\/>Both organizations are intent on driving more open-access publishing, and want to make it easier for authors to publish in this way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combining open access with evidence-based acquisition is expected to enable the institutions to decide how they want to spend their budgets and to ease the funding and administrative burden on authors who are publishing open-access.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-212023 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Max-Planck-Society-logo-lined-ftw-300x90.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"90\"\/>The flexibility from this new agreement to tailor the program each year depending on users\u2019 needs should ensure that Max Planck can continually align the publishing model with the evolving needs of its researchers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a prepared statement on the news of this collaboration, Jack Macdonald, library sales director at Cambridge University Press, emphasizes the bespoke nature of this new sales and publishing model.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is the first agreement of this kind for the press,\u201d Macdonald says, \u201cand it reflects our commitment to making open-access publishing more affordable and accessible, while continuing to offer high-quality books and Elements to readers worldwide.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-212025\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-212025 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Jack-Macdonald-lined-ftw-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-212025\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"> Jack Macdonald<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCambridge and the Max Planck Society,\u201d he says, \u201crecognize the importance of collaborating to expand open-access book publishing, providing better support for authors, while maintaining access to ebooks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In case you\u2019re not familiar with Macdonald\u2019s use of the term elements, <a href=\"https:\/\/publishingperspectives.com\/2025\/07\/uk-cambridge-university-press-publishes-a-2000th-element\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">our coverage from July notes his reference<\/a>. These are parts of the \u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/publications\/elements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Cambridge Elements<\/a>\u201d collection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under this model, new Cambridge books by authors at Max Planck Institutes will be eligible for open-access publishing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Backlist titles will also be eligible for open-access conversion on a case-by-case basis, and Max Planck researchers will be granted unlimited access to books on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Cambridge Core<\/a> platform.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-212026\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-212026 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Adam-Der-lined-ftw-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-212026\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"> \u00c1d\u00e1m D\u00e9r<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking for Max Planck, \u00c1d\u00e1m D\u00e9r, head of scientific information provision at the Max Planck Digital Library, highlights in his comment how this new agreement will benefit the Planck program\u2019s academics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re excited to have worked closely with the Cambridge team through an exceptionally open and transparent negotiation process,\u201d D\u00e9r says, \u201cand to have reached an agreement that will enable our authors to not only access the books and Elements from Cambridge of relevance to them but also publish their books open-access with Cambridge University Press.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis agreement reflects our longstanding and steadfast commitment to open access and ensures worldwide reach and the greatest possible impact for our researchers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For clarification, evidence-based acquisition\u00a0refers to a model in which institutions, in this case, are given access to an extensive collection of Cambridge titles before they must decide which titles to purchase in perpetuity.
