{"id":75218,"date":"2025-09-20T12:01:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-20T12:01:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/75218\/"},"modified":"2025-09-20T12:01:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-20T12:01:07","slug":"phil-hogans-consultancy-firm-earned-e1m-last-year-for-brussels-work-filings-show-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/75218\/","title":{"rendered":"Phil Hogan\u2019s consultancy firm earned \u20ac1m last year for Brussels work, filings show \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-commission\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-commission\/\">European commissioner<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/phil-hogan\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/phil-hogan\/\">Phil Hogan\u2019s<\/a> consultancy firm earned at least \u20ac1 million last year, with banking giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jp-morgan-chase\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jp-morgan-chase\/\">JP Morgan Chase<\/a>, Enfer labs and law firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dla-piper\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dla-piper\/\">DLA Piper<\/a> among his larger clients, according to new filings. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\/\">Fine Gael<\/a> minister started a consultancy business after he resigned as EU trade commissioner in the fallout from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/politics\/eu-commission-says-golfgate-not-sole-reason-for-hogan-resignation-1.4794131\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/politics\/eu-commission-says-golfgate-not-sole-reason-for-hogan-resignation-1.4794131\">the \u201cGolfgate\u201d controversy during the Covid-19 pandemic<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">European Union (EU) transparency rules require lobbying firms to declare revenue from their work in Brussels and records show Hogan Strategic Advisory Services was paid in the region of \u20ac1 million last year for declared work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The firm said it carried out work on behalf of telecoms firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vodafone\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vodafone\/\">Vodafone<\/a>, Dutch semiconductor manufacturer Nexperia, and Velico Medical, a company founded by Irish entrepreneur Richard Meehan. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Hogan splits his time between Ireland and Brussels. His firm was incorporated in Ireland as an unlimited company, meaning it is not required to publish annual accounts of its profits or other financial information. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Therefore, filings submitted to the EU\u2019s transparency register provide the only insight into how much the former minister for the environment\u2019s business is bringing in. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The latest filing states DLA Piper was Mr Hogan\u2019s top client last year, paying his consultancy firm between \u20ac200,000 and \u20ac300,000. The company reported receiving revenues of between \u20ac100,000 and \u20ac200,000 from Enfer Labs, a Co Kildare firm involved in veterinary diagnostics. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Hogan received between \u20ac100,000 and \u20ac200,000 for his role sitting on US banking giant JP Morgan Chase\u2019s \u201cadvisory council\u201d, providing insights on developments in Europe. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/carlow-kilkenny\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/carlow-kilkenny\/\">Carlow-Kilkenny<\/a> TD resigned as EU trade commissioner in August 2020 under political pressure for attending a dinner organised by the Oireachtas golf society at a time when Covid-19 restrictions on large gatherings were in place. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was subject to a two-year \u201ccooling off\u201d period, which prevented him from lobbying or doing other work that overlapped with his old trade and agriculture portfolios in the commission, the EU\u2019s executive arm that proposes laws. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The Irish Times previously reported that Mr Hogan had to temporarily stop his consultancy work for DLA Piper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2024\/09\/26\/phil-hogan-consultancy-work-risked-damaging-european-commissions-reputation\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2024\/09\/26\/phil-hogan-consultancy-work-risked-damaging-european-commissions-reputation\/\">after the commission\u2019s ethics watchdog felt he could be breaching those rules<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Since those limits on his consultancy work were lifted, his firm has reported revenues of at least \u20ac1 million a year, according to EU filings. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The latest filing, covering 2024, states his company was paid between \u20ac100,000 and \u20ac200,000 by Velico Medical, a US-based company that develops blood transfusion products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">His firm declared receiving up to \u20ac50,000 for work on behalf of Vodafone, between \u20ac50,000 and \u20ac100,000 for consultancy work for card payments giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/visa\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/visa\/\">Visa<\/a>, and an amount in the same range from Nexperia. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Hogan, who served as a minister in Enda
