The update, shared in a series of photos Wednesday, Sept. 17, on social media, comes days after<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caller.com\/story\/news\/2025\/09\/10\/starship-flight-11-spacex-launch-elon-musk-when-starbase-texas\/86057745007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.caller.com\/story\/news\/2025\/09\/10\/starship-flight-11-spacex-launch-elon-musk-when-starbase-texas\/86057745007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"> SpaceX recently tested the lower stage rocket booster<\/a>, known as Super Heavy, at its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caller.com\/story\/news\/2025\/08\/14\/starbase-rocket-launch-site-spacex-starship\/85561897007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.caller.com\/story\/news\/2025\/08\/14\/starbase-rocket-launch-site-spacex-starship\/85561897007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Starbase facility<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While it&#8217;s unclear just when Starship could get off the ground again, all signs suggest SpaceX is rapidly preparing for the 11th overall demonstration of a vehicle that could one day be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/08\/21\/starship-launch-mars-elon-musk\/85726892007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/08\/21\/starship-launch-mars-elon-musk\/85726892007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">bound for the moon and Mars<\/a>. SpaceX has launched Starship <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caller.com\/story\/news\/2025\/08\/06\/spacex-starship-launch-flight\/85538063007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.caller.com\/story\/news\/2025\/08\/06\/spacex-starship-launch-flight\/85538063007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">10 times from Texas since tests began<\/a> in April 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/08\/27\/spacex-starship-succesful-launch-flight-11\/85844865007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/08\/27\/spacex-starship-succesful-launch-flight-11\/85844865007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the most recent of which was Aug. 26<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That previus test flight, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/08\/05\/starship-elon-musk-spacex-launch\/85521136007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/08\/05\/starship-elon-musk-spacex-launch\/85521136007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the fourth of 2025<\/a>, was far and away SpaceX&#8217;s most successful Starship demonstration of the year following\u00a0a string of disappointing launches <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/08\/19\/spacex-starship-exploded-investigation-flight-10\/85726025007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/08\/19\/spacex-starship-exploded-investigation-flight-10\/85726025007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ending\u00a0prematurely with the upper stage&#8217;s fiery demise<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Billionaire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/elon-musk\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/elon-musk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Elon Musk<\/a>, the founder of SpaceX, has indicated his intent to ramp up the frequency of Starship launches ahead of plans for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/space\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/space\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">spacecraft <\/a>to land humans on the lunar surface and the Red Planet.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what to know about Starship, as well as\u00a0what we know so far about SpaceX&#8217;s plans for the spacecraft&#8217;s next test flight.<\/p>\n<p>Starship spacecraft moved to launch pad for testing<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX shared three photos <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SpaceX\/status\/1968380376684052830\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SpaceX\/status\/1968380376684052830\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">on social media site X<\/a>, which is owned by Musk, that shows the silver upper stage portion of the megarocket being moved to the launch pad at Starbase for preflight ground testing.<\/p>\n<p>The first photo shows the 171-foot vehicle being transported on a road in the dark of night. The other two photos show Starship being held by the giant mechicanl arms of the launch tower known as &#8220;chopsticks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The vehicle has not yet been mated with the 232-foot lower stage booster, Super Heavy.<\/p>\n<p>When is Starship flight 11 launch date?<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX has not yet announced a target launch date for its next Starship flight 11, but Musk has <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1927531406017601915?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1927531406017601915%7Ctwgr%5E1b9cb3d4315805209991092f1b6ab97b107a4413%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.caller.com%2Fstory%2Fnews%2F2025%2F05%2F28%2Fspacex-starship-launch-flight-9-musk%2F83879483007%2F\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1927531406017601915?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1927531406017601915%7Ctwgr%5E1b9cb3d4315805209991092f1b6ab97b107a4413%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.caller.com%2Fstory%2Fnews%2F2025%2F05%2F28%2Fspacex-starship-launch-flight-9-musk%2F83879483007%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">previously indicated his desire<\/a> to ramp up testing to one or more a month.<\/p>\n<p>While that hasn&#8217;t exactly happened quite yet, the U.S. government has handed SpaceX a few key wins that might ease the company&#8217;s pathway to more frequent launches.<\/p>\n<p>In August, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/politics\/donald-trump\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/politics\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">President Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0signed an executive order\u00a0aimed at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/08\/14\/trump-executive-order-commercial-rocket-launch-spacex\/85654428007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/08\/14\/trump-executive-order-commercial-rocket-launch-spacex\/85654428007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">rolling back\u00a0federal regulations on commercial spaceflight companies<\/a> \u2013 a sign that private sector rocket companies like SpaceX remain crucial to U.S. spaceflight ambitions, even after a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/06\/06\/trump-elon-musk-spacex-contracts-dragon\/84066587007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/06\/06\/trump-elon-musk-spacex-contracts-dragon\/84066587007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u00a0public falling out between Trump and Musk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The move came a few months after the FAA, which licenses commercial rocket launches,\u00a0approved\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caller.com\/story\/news\/2025\/05\/21\/spacex-starship-texas-launch-flight-9-faa\/83764454007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">in May for SpaceX to conduct<\/a>\u00a0as many as 25 Starship test flights a year. Starship launched just four times in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caller.com\/story\/news\/2025\/06\/30\/spacex-starship-explosion-texas-starbase-mexico-sheinbaum\/84415662007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">has become known for its risk-tolerant philosophy<\/a>\u00a0when it comes to Starship&#8217;s development. Musk has stressed that rapid and frequent testing, which\u00a0sometimes leads to explosive ends,\u00a0can still provide data that helps engineers improve the vehicle&#8217;s design.<\/p>\n<p>Was the Starship launch successful?<\/p>\n<p>Starship most recently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/launches\/starship-flight-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">got off the ground Aug. 26<\/a> from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caller.com\/story\/news\/2025\/08\/14\/starbase-rocket-launch-site-spacex-starship\/85561897007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">SpaceX&#8217;s sprawling Starbase<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 the complex that doubles as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caller.com\/story\/tech\/science\/space\/2025\/08\/22\/spacex-starbase-boca-chica-texas-cape-canaveral-starship-future-at-nasa-kennedy-space-center\/85721655007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Texas city and the company&#8217;s headquarters<\/a> in South Texas.<\/p>\n<p>The upper stage, the vehicle known as Starship, separated from the rocket booster about three minutes into the flight to continue on its own on a suborbital trajectory and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/08\/22\/starship-rocket-launch-spacex-when\/85758301007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/08\/22\/starship-rocket-launch-spacex-when\/85758301007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">hit two major milestones<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>succeeding in deploying eight mock Starlink satellites, a key milestone that SpaceX has so far been unable to attempt on previous flights<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SpaceX\/status\/1960495065081503769\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reigniting one of its Raptor engines<\/a>\u00a0in space for the second time ever, a necessary maneuver to bring a vehicle back to the ground<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Re-entering Earth&#8217;s atmosphere\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/spacexs-starship-passes-development-rut-deploys-first-mock-satellites-2025-08-26\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">about an hour into the mission over the Indian Ocean<\/a>, Starship then fired its engines to make\u00a0a controlled vertical landing on the ocean&#8217;s surface west of Australia before exploding in a fireball.<\/p>\n<p>As for Super Heavy, the rocket booster made a water landing as planned off the Gulf of Mexico, which the U.S. government has renamed the Gulf of America, after completing several in-flight experiments.<\/p>\n<p>What is Starship? How big is Mars-bound rocket?<\/p>\n<p>The Starship,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caller.com\/story\/news\/2025\/08\/21\/starship-size-rocket-vulcan-new-glenn-spacex\/85738759007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">standing 403 feet tall when fully stacked<\/a>, is regarded as the world&#8217;s largest and most powerful launch vehicle ever developed. When fully integrated, the launch system is\u00a0composed of both a 232-foot Super Heavy rocket and the 171-foot upper stage Starship, the spacecraft where crew and cargo would ride.<\/p>\n<p>Super Heavy alone is powered by 33 of SpaceX\u2019s Raptor engines that give the initial burst of thrust at liftoff. The upper stage Starship section is powered by six Raptor engines that will ultimately travel in orbit.<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX is developing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/vehicles\/starship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Starship<\/a>\u00a0to be a fully reusable transportation system, meaning the rocket and vehicle can return to the ground for additional missions.<\/p>\n<p>In the years ahead, Starship is\u00a0set to serve a pivotal role in future U.S. spaceflight.<\/p>\n<p>Starship is the centerpiece of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/08\/21\/starship-launch-mars-elon-musk\/85726892007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/08\/21\/starship-launch-mars-elon-musk\/85726892007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Musk&#8217;s\u00a0vision of sending the first humans to Mars<\/a>, and is also critical in NASA&#8217;s plans to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/03\/06\/athena-intuitive-machines-lunar-lander-moon-landing-nasa\/81724695007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/03\/06\/athena-intuitive-machines-lunar-lander-moon-landing-nasa\/81724695007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">return astronauts to the moon&#8217;s surface<\/a>. What to know about Starbase<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/news\/2025\/08\/14\/starbase-rocket-launch-site-spacex-starship\/85561897007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Starbase is SpaceX&#8217;s company town built<\/a>\u00a0about 23 miles from Brownsville in South Texas.
