Living in Queensland, sixteen-year-old <a data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/taylor_x_ocean\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Taylor Ladd-Hudson;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Taylor Ladd-Hudson <\/a>has witnessed dozens of humpbacks entangled in <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/tourists-oblivious-to-disturbing-scene-500m-off-sunny-aussie-beach-my-body-felt-heavy-072515494.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:shark nets;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shark nets <\/a>controversially set by the state government, but she describes the sound she heard this morning as \u201csomething that shook me to my core\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI\u2019m really good at dealing with my emotions during entanglements, but I couldn\u2019t hold back the tears. It was gut-wrenching and heart-shattering to hear the whale in so much distress and pain. It\u2019s a sound I hope no one else has to hear in their life,\u201d she told Yahoo News Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The juvenile whale Taylor saw trapped on Friday was at Marcoola on the Sunshine Coast, a popular tourism area. It&#8217;s the fifth whale to be entangled in shark nets in three days, with <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/calls-for-urgent-change-after-confronting-scene-off-aussie-coast-worst-ive-ever-seen-020058299.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:mothers and calves also trapped at Noosa;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mothers and calves also trapped at Noosa <\/a>and Hervey Bay.<\/p>\n<p>Will the whales survive their shark net ordeals?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Department of Primary Industries (DPI), which is responsible for the state\u2019s shark net program, said it received a call about the Marcoola incident at 8am, and the animal was \u201csuccessfully released\u201d at around 10am.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cOur teams were alerted to this incident by reports to the Shark Control Program hotline and we had crews on the scene very quickly. We thank everyone who contacted the hotline, enabling us to provide prompt assistance,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Although all whales have been freed, it\u2019s unknown whether they will survive in the long term. Earlier this week <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/dark-side-of-10000km-annual-aussie-phenomenon-most-tourists-dont-see-they-just-give-up-232241157.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Griffith University whale expert Dr Olaf Meynecke;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Griffith University whale expert Dr Olaf Meynecke<\/a> told Yahoo News more research is needed to understand the impact of entanglement. \u201cWe don\u2019t seem to be actually caring about the whales after we\u2019re disentangling them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The spike in entanglements has prompted a renewed call from conservationists to remove shark nets during the annual humpback migration.<\/p>\n<p>Concern shark nets are damaging Australia&#8217;s tourism reputation<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Envoy Foundation founder Andre Borell accused the Queensland government of being \u201cbehind the times\u201d, warning that repeatedly ensnaring the whales that tourists come to watch is bad for Australia\u2019s reputation. He advocates for replacing the nets with modern alternatives like drone surveillance. He would also like to see the government tag whales after they\u2019re released to track whether they survive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe spend tens of millions of dollars trying to look great to international audiences, and undo so much of that work by broadcasting images of entangled whales on our coastline every year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">NSW was set to trial the removal of shark nets from some beaches, but that program was temporarily suspended following a fatal attack. Whether these devices actually deter sharks from the coastline is disputed.<\/p>\n<p>Minister says human life must come first<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Crisafulli Government in Queensland has doubled down on them. In May, it announced a contentious plan to expand their use as part of an <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/late-night-beach-find-highlights-dark-side-of-aussie-states-88-million-tourism-pledge-074215574.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:$88 million shark control program;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$88 million shark control program<\/a>. Source: Taylor Ladd-Hudson\/Sea Shepherd<\/p>\n<p>Witness concerned for whales after watching them from beach<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The state\u2019s Department of Primary Industries (DPI) confirmed with Yahoo that it would be immediately replacing the damaged nets at Marcoola and Noosa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe remind the public that for their own safety, it is dangerous to approach or try to release whales trapped in nets,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As the southern whale migration has only just begun, Taylor expects to see more entanglements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The memory of what she saw at Marcoola will take a long time to fade. And she fears the juvenile whale and its mother may not survive the perilous journey back to Antarctica because they\u2019ve expended so much energy during the entanglement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe baby had become entangled, and the mum was swimming around and under the nets. She was really upset. You could also see another male escort swimming around the nets, really distressed,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThere were eight other &#8230; humpback whales in the vicinity.
