{"id":76605,"date":"2025-09-21T07:28:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-21T07:28:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/76605\/"},"modified":"2025-09-21T07:28:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-21T07:28:09","slug":"hse-irelands-largest-employer-choosing-its-next-chief-executive-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/76605\/","title":{"rendered":"HSE, Ireland\u2019s largest employer, choosing its next chief executive \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The process to select the next chief executive of Ireland\u2019s largest employer, with a workforce of more than 148,000 full-time equivalents and a budget of \u20ac26.9 billion for this year, is moving along.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Applications closed this week for the position of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hse\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hse\/\">HSE<\/a> chief executive, which comes with a salary of \u20ac398,174. The competition is being run to replace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/bernard-gloster\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/bernard-gloster\/\">Bernard Gloster<\/a>, who tendered his resignation in May after three years in the role and 38 years in the health service. He departs in March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A five-year specified purpose contract is on offer, based on a 35-hour \u201cstandard working week\u201d, which comes out at \u20ac218.77 per hour, though the successful candidate may \u201cfrom time to time be required to work additional hours for the proper discharge of their duties\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis post is being advertised at a time when there are long-standing challenges in health services, and it is recognised that tackling these challenges will require strong leadership and commitment,\u201d the HSE\u2019s candidate booklet notes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">It cites a growing and ageing population, health inequalities and attracting and retaining the right workforce as big issues the eventual appointee will have to combat. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSpecifically, the number of people waiting for treatment is too long and there are annual problems with emergency department overcrowding,\u201d it adds, somewhat familiarly. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Among those mentioned in health service circles as potential internal contenders are regional executive officers Tony Canavan (HSE West and North West) and Martina Queally (HSE Dublin and South East).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Martina Queally, regional executive officer for HSE Dublin and South East. Photograph: Gareth Chaney\/Collins <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">External runners are also expected in the competition for a job that seeks someone with \u201cextensive transformational leadership skills\u201d, \u201cexcellent problem solving and analytical\u201d abilities and the capacity to \u201cexercise exceptional judgment in the face of conflicting pressures\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">One outsider who will not be throwing their hat in the ring is former minister for health <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/stephen-donnelly\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/stephen-donnelly\/\">Stephen Donnelly<\/a>. Photograph: Keith Meyers\/The New York Times Late Malachy McCourt facing a \u2018public hanging\u2019 in New York<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/new-york-city\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/new-york-city\/\">New York<\/a> street is to be renamed in honour of the late writer, actor and broadcaster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/malachy-mccourt\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/malachy-mccourt\/\">Malachy McCourt<\/a>, one of the most gregarious and beloved exemplars of the Irish-American experience. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Born in Brooklyn to Irish emigrant parents Angela (n\u00e9e Sheehan) and Malachy McCourt snr, on September 20th, 1931, McCourt returned to his mother\u2019s native <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/limerick\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/limerick\/\">Limerick<\/a> as a three-year-old at the height of the depression. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">He spent his formative years there but returned to New York aged 20 after being sent the fare by his brother Frank, who then worked as a schoolteacher but went on to write the bestselling memoir <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/angelas-ashes\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/angelas-ashes\/\">Angela\u2019s Ashes<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Over the next 70 years Malachy established himself as a chronicler of New York\u2019s literary and bohemian scene, writing memoirs of his own, including the popular A Monk Swimming. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Malachy McCourt poster\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/NZUEKRJMGVDDFDKXWCPGUT6R3Q.jpg\"   width=\"800\" height=\"1066\"\/>Malachy McCourt poster <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was also a bar owner, raconteur and actor, appearing on stage and in films including Brewster\u2019s Millions and The Devil\u2019s Own. He stood as Green Party candidate for New York governor in 2006, a race won by Democrat Eliot Spitzer. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The honour comes after months of lobbying by McCourt\u2019s friends and fans, spearheaded by New York councillor Gale Brewer. Malachy McCourt Lane will be close to West 84th Street, where a high school is named after Frank. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s appropriate that it\u2019s not Malachy McCourt \u2018Street\u2019, \u2018Boulevard\u2019 or \u2018Avenue\u2019,\u201d said playwright John McDonagh, a long-time friend and radio co-host of McCourt\u2019s. \u201cIt\u2019s \u2018Lane\u2019.
