yet many consumers misunderstand the language used to describe their home connectivity, new research has claimed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">A survey of UK adults by TalkTalk claims although three-quarters claim to understand \u201cWi-Fi,\u201d almost a quarter remain unclear about its meaning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">When asked which word they use for home connectivity, one third of respondents said \u201cWi-Fi,\u201d slightly ahead of \u201cinternet\u201d and \u201cbroadband.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Preferred terminology and confusion between services<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Far fewer selected \u201cwireless\u201d or more informal alternatives like \u201cT\u2019internet\u201d to describe home connectivity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Despite telecom companies still pushing broadband branding, public usage indicates a shift toward everyday terms that feel familiar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">However, this preference does not always translate into an accurate understanding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Many still mix up broadband, the wired service entering the property, with Wi-Fi, the wireless signal distributed inside the home by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/networking\/routers-storage\/best-router-9-top-wireless-routers-on-test-1090523\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:router;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">router<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Some even believe the two terms are identical or that broadband is simply an older name for Wi-Fi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">In rating participants&#8217; confidence with various networking terms, 76% said they understand \u201cWi-Fi,\u201d but confidence drops when the language becomes more technical.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Only half reported knowing what \u201cfiber\u201d means, even though service providers heavily advertise fiber broadband.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Terms like \u201cIP address,\u201d \u201cLAN,\u201d and \u201cFTTP\u201d ranked far lower, with single-digit familiarity for some entries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">This knowledge gap extends to security tools, as just over half said they understand VPNs, even though the <a href=\"https:\/\/tech.yahoo.com\/vpn\/articles\/best-vpn-2025-130800865.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:best VPNs;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">best VPNs<\/a> are always on our screens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Despite several ads about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/vpn\/best-vpn-uk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:best VPN for the UK;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">best VPN for the UK<\/a>, many Britons barely know anything more than the basic functions of VPNs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Consumers are not taking the blame for the knowledge gap; instead, they said telecom companies should use simple, jargon-free language to ease understanding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Almost nine in ten stressed the need for clear communication, while 62% admitted jargon can leave them confused or overwhelmed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Over half said complex terminology makes technology-related information difficult to understand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">TalkTalk\u2019s own leadership acknowledged the problem, suggesting the industry has not kept pace with how consumers speak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cWi-Fi is a staple in all our homes, yet as an industry we haven\u2019t kept up with the times when we talk to our customers,\u201d said Steve Wallage, TalkTalk\u2019s Product, Experience and Propositions Director.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Providers aiming to build trust may need to rethink their language, focusing less on technical specifications and more on practical clarity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cOur latest research tells us that people prefer to communicate in the same way that they speak, without jargon, and our industry should reflect that,\u201d Wallage added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">If the industry does not align with consumers, companies will keep saying one thing while users interpret something entirely different.<\/p>\n<p>You might also like<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission.
