{"id":77892,"date":"2025-09-22T00:29:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-22T00:29:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/77892\/"},"modified":"2025-09-22T00:29:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-22T00:29:10","slug":"dublin-community-holds-vigil-for-daniel-aruebose-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/77892\/","title":{"rendered":"Dublin community holds vigil for Daniel Aruebose \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">A vigil for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/daniel-aruebose\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/daniel-aruebose\/\">Daniel Aruebose<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\">Dublin<\/a> boy whose remains are believed to be those found buried on lands in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donabate\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donabate\/\">Donabate<\/a> last week, has been told his death had fostered a sense of togetherness in the area, as people expressed their grief and shock.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Several hundred people attended the event on Sunday evening on Donabate Green in the north Dublin village, where hymns were played, blue balloons were released and people lit candles and placed them next to a framed photograph of the boy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Rev Augustine Fokchet of Donabate, Portrane and Balheary Parish told those gathered that the large attendance at the event was a reflection of deep sadness but also the strength of community in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cFor baby Daniel, all of us come out of a spirit of community living and a spirit of togetherness,\u201d he said. \u201cIn moments like this, we show the milk of kindness that each one of us is made of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mary McLoughlin, chair of Donabate-Portrane Senior Citizens, said she organised the event as so many people have come to her to discuss a gathering to pay their respects to Daniel and to remember him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere\u2019s been a great sense of sadness and loss here, we can\u2019t believe it really. We are ask \u2018why has this happened?\u2019 There\u2019s a sense of loneliness around the parish. We felt this was important, so people could get together in a close-knit community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Francis Morris, a young mother from the area, was among those present, with her children, and told The Irish Times the event was important as it afforded people the opportunity pay their respects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cMy own son is three and a half years old and I really felt it because I know the little boy, Daniel, was about this age when he went missing. So it really hit home,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis is a small community and we just wanted to come out for him. Photograph supplied to the Journal <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Karen O\u2019Brien, who was part of a large group from nearby Portrane attending the vigil, said she \u201ccouldn\u2019t not be here\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cThere\u2019s a dark cloud over the community in Donabate and Portrane,\u201d she said. \u201cMy daughter goes to school in Donabate Community College and they would have walked up through that laneway (beside where the remains were found) on their way to play football for the school. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cTo know that you\u2019re walking by &#8230; it\u2019s unheard of. But we are glad he has been found. And the truth will come out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Daniel was living in a family setting in The Gallery apartment complex in Donabate when garda\u00ed believe he died about four years ago. Partial skeletal remains, believed to be Daniel\u2019s, were discovered by garda\u00ed, buried on lands off Portrane Road, just outside the village, last Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2025\/09\/20\/gardai-set-for-new-robust-approach-in-daniel-aruebose-inquiry\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Garda\u00ed set for new approach in Daniel Aruebose inquiryOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Garda\u00ed are still trying to determine how Daniel died, whether he was a victim of foul play and why his remains were buried in a field. Though he and his family had previously been clients of Tusla for about two years, including as his parents considered giving him up for adoption, his disappearance went unnoticed until late last month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The first concerns were raised with the Garda, via Tusla, when checks were made on a social welfare payment, related to Daniel, that was being claimed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ombudsman-for-children\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ombudsman-for-children\/\">Ombudsman for Children<\/a> has said a new statutory review mechanism for examining child deaths must be urgently established in the wake of Daniel\u2019s death. Dr Niall Muldoon said the \u201cdevastatingly sad\u201d case leaves the State with \u201cserious questions to answer\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The fact that Daniel \u201ccould have disappeared without anyone noticing is shocking\u201d but \u201cthe fact he is the second young child to disappear in the past 12 months leaves the whole of the State with serious questions to answer\u201d.
