Deadline called this, Andrew Durham\u2019s feature film writing and directing debut, \u201ca memorable one that is unlikely to leave a dry eye in the house.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe film adapts Alysia Abbott\u2019s moving 2013 memoir of growing up in San Francisco with her widowed father just as gay pride was taking hold and the AIDS epidemic was on the horizon.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/scoot-mcnairy\/\" id=\"auto-tag_scoot-mcnairy\" data-tag=\"scoot-mcnairy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scoot McNairy<\/a> stars as Steve and <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/emilia-jones\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Emilia Jones<\/a> as his daughter Alysia. Geena Davis plays Alysia\u2019s grandmother. The cast also features Cody Fern (American Horror Story), Maria Bakalova (The Apprentice), Bella Murphy (Coming 2 America), Adam Lambert and Nessa Dougherty in her first screen role.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2023\/01\/fairyland-sundance-film-festival-review-emilia-jones-and-scoot-mcnairy-in-touching-memoir-set-against-san-franciscos-aids-pandemic-of-70s-and-80s-1235229604\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Our review<\/a> called the film, \u201cat its very big heart, a universal story of family, love, staying true to who you are, and being there for each other when it counts the most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAs for the cast, \u201cBoth actresses who share the role of Alysia at different ages, Jones and Dougherty, are excellent, with Dougherty a real find and truly irresistible as the young Alysia. McNairy is superb, particularly in a poignant heart-to-heart scene with his daughter as the ravages of AIDS start to catch up with him. The supporting cast also includes Cody Fern, very fine as Eddie, who lives in the loft with them, Maria Bakalova, who manages to make a real impression in a single scene set in the pharmacy, as does Lambert in his brief scenes as Charlie.\u00a0\u201c<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/sofia-coppola\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sofia Coppola<\/a>\u00a0serves as lead producer for this American Zoetrope production. Other producers include Durham, Megan Carlson, Siena Oberman, Greg Lauritano and Laure Sudreau.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tFairyland will be released in theaters by Lionsgate on October 10.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The new trailer for heartfelt 2023 Sundance entry Fairyland is here.
