{"id":803,"date":"2025-08-15T22:27:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-15T22:27:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/803\/"},"modified":"2025-08-15T22:27:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-15T22:27:08","slug":"how-wildfires-in-spain-consumed-heroes-who-rushed-to-help-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/803\/","title":{"rendered":"How wildfires in Spain consumed \u2018heroes\u2019 who rushed to help \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mircea Spiridon was driving home on the outskirts of Tres Cantos in the countryside north of Madrid when he saw the flames. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/weather-events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/weather-events\/\">wildfire<\/a>, fuelled by what has come to be known in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/spain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/spain\/\">Spain<\/a> as the deadly \u201crule of 30\u201d \u2013 temperatures above 30 degrees, relative humidity below 30, and winds of over 30km an hour \u2013 had sprung up to sweep across 6km  in just 40 minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Fond of animals, the 50-year-old mechanic realised  the flames were encroaching on a farm that was well known locally as a place where people stabled their horses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe called me and told me there was a fire on the farm. He said: \u2018I\u2019m going there, everything\u2019s burning\u2019,\u201d Spiridon\u2019s wife Elena told Spanish newspaper El Pa\u00eds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She heard the sound of commotion and people calling to free the horses. Then, nothing more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Across the Mediterranean, drier summers and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/climate-change\/\">hotter temperatures<\/a> are driving wildfires of a ferocity that firefighters struggle to contain.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"People try to battle a wildfire in the village of Santa Baia de Montes in the province of Ourense, northwestern Spain, this week. Photograph: Miguel Riopa\/AFP  <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The inferno in Tres Cantos was just one of 14 major fires that Spain battled simultaneously this week, ranging from its southern tip to its most temperate northern regions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This year fire has consumed nearly 440,000 hectares of land in the euro zone, according to calculations by the EU Science Hub; on average, the amount of land burnt up in the same period of the year is half that. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In Spain, 115,000 hectares was consumed in just the past few days. Several blazes converged into one huge fire in the region of Galicia, cutting off roads and the region\u2019s rail connection to Madrid. The fires forced the evacuation of more than 8,000 people from their homes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/2025\/08\/14\/spain-struggles-to-contain-spate-of-record-breaking-wildfires\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spain struggles to contain spate of record-breaking wildfiresOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Conditions have been worsened by a brutal heatwave that is forecast to persist through this weekend. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere is no precedent for a period between August 1st and 20th as warm as that of 2025,\u201d national weather agency Aemet said in a statement. On Tuesday, 65 Spanish weather stations registered temperatures of 42 degrees or more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">For the first time, the country activated the European Union\u2019s disaster assistance system to appeal for help; France sent two water bombing aircraft in response.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It was the fifth European country to do so in one week. Photograph: Miguel Riopa\/AFP  <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The European Commission\u2019s Joint Research Centre notes  scientific research suggests that \u201cforest fire damage is likely to increase in the future due to climate change\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a video recorded as firefighters struggled to contain the spreading flames at Tres Cantos this week, Madrid regional minister Carlos Novillo Piris said the wildfire had been driven by a \u201cdry storm\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis fire was explosive,\u201d he said. \u201cIt spread at a speed we have never seen before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">When nothing was heard from Spiridon after his fateful decision to try to save the horses, family friends went to search for him. She would have to raise their two teenage sons alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Photographs published in the Spanish press record the terrible aftermath. Photograph: Getty Images   <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Spiridon was one of three people to die in Spain\u2019s wildfires this week, each of them ordinary people who saw the flames and rushed to help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Abel Ramos Falag\u00e1n (35) from a village of 200 people in Spain\u2019s northwestern region of Castile and Le\u00f3n, ran a small construction company and offered his brush cutters to the firefighting efforts when a blaze began to threaten the nearby countryside. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was working to create a firebreak with his friend and fellow member of a local motorcycle club, 37-year-old Jaime Aparicio, when the wildfire developed into two fronts that trapped them on either side.
