Industry lobby groups and EU countries have stated that these standards should be ready well ahead of the August deadline so they can comply.<\/p>\n<p>In July, some of Europe\u2019s top CEOs <a href=\"https:\/\/aichampions.eu\/#stoptheclock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">called<\/a> for a two-year pause \u201cto address the uncertainty.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Commission\u2019s thinking on a potential pause has shifted over the last six months.\u00a0If standards are not ready in time, \u201cwe should not rule out postponing some parts of the AI Act,\u201d the EU\u2019s tech chief Henna Virkkunen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-could-postpone-parts-of-ai-rulebook-tech-chief-says\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> the EU\u2019s digital ministers in June.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/GettyImages-2235698174-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7204584\"  \/>If standards are not ready in time, \u201cwe should not rule out postponing some parts of the AI Act,\u201d the EU\u2019s tech chief Henna Virkkunen told the EU\u2019s digital ministers in June.\u00a0 | Omar Havana\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Later, she set a deadline of late August to decide if these standards were ready.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With no final assessment of the standards in sight, last week saw a fresh acceleration.\u00a0Draghi declared publicly on Tuesday that the high-risk AI rules should be paused \u201cuntil we better understand the drawbacks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same day, the Commission opened a <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/law\/better-regulation\/info\/law\/better-regulation\/have-your-say\/initiatives\/7568284-Digital-package-digital-omnibus-_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">consultation<\/a> on an effort to simplify the EU\u2019s tech rulebooks, in which it said that \u201ctargeted adjustments\u201d to the EU\u2019s AI Act are on the table as part of that package.\u00a0Pausing parts of the act would require an adjustment to the law.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"But companies are awaiting technical standards that they have not yet received.
