{"id":80647,"date":"2025-09-23T09:12:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-23T09:12:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/80647\/"},"modified":"2025-09-23T09:12:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-23T09:12:08","slug":"experts-alarmed-as-trump-pushes-unproven-link-between-paracetamol-and-autism-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/80647\/","title":{"rendered":"Experts alarmed as Trump pushes unproven link between paracetamol and autism \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Medical experts are raising alarms after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a> warned pregnant women to avoid taking paracetamol, baselessly linking the painkiller \u2013 sold in the US as Tylenol \u2013 with a rise in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/autism\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/autism\">autism <\/a>among children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">From the Society for Maternal-Foetal Medicine (SMFM) to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (ACOG), doctors have endorsed the use of acetaminophen during pregnancy after Mr Trump said pregnant women who can\u2019t \u201ctough it out\u201d without the painkiller should limit their intake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSuggestions that acetaminophen use in pregnancy causes autism are not only highly concerning to clinicians but also irresponsible when considering the harmful and confusing message they send to pregnant patients, including those who may need to rely on this beneficial medicine during pregnancy,\u201d read a statement from Steven Fleischman, the president of the ACOG.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">After months of widely trumpeted investigations spearheaded by the health secretary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/robert-f-kennedy-jr\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/robert-f-kennedy-jr\/\" target=\"_blank\">Robert F Kennedy Jr<\/a>, Mr Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2025\/09\/22\/trump-officials-unveil-highly-contentious-conclusions-on-autism\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2025\/09\/22\/trump-officials-unveil-highly-contentious-conclusions-on-autism\/\">announced on Monday that pregnant women should limit their use of acetaminophen.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He claimed the painkiller heightens the risk of autism when it used by pregnant women, an assertion hotly contested by scientists internationally and contradicted by studies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Speaking from the White House, flanked by Mr Kennedy, the president said he had \u201cwaited for 20 years for this meeting &#8230;\u201d and added: \u201cIt\u2019s not that everything\u2019s 100 per cent understood or known, but I think we\u2019ve made a lot of strides.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Kennedy said the health department was encouraging physicians to exercise their \u201cbest judgment\u201d by prescribing the lowest effective dose for the shortest necessary duration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The claims from Mr Trump and his health secretary were also widely condemned by medical experts and regulators around the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The British health regulator MHRA said there remains no evidence linking the use of paracetamol during pregnancy with autism and that it continues to recommend it for pain relief. That view was also backed by Australia\u2019s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), which reconfirmed that the drug is safe for use in pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A statement from the Society for Maternal-Foetal Medicine said \u201ca thorough review of existing research suggesting a potential link between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and an increased risk of autism and attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children has not established a causal relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tylenol posted on Instagram an acknowledgment that followers \u201cmay have questions about conflicting information\u201d in recent media coverage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhat we can tell you is: credible, independent scientific data continues to show no proven link between taking acetaminophen and autism. Medical and public organisations agree,\u201d reads the video.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Doctors have also on social media spread the message about Tylenol\u2019s safe use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIf you are pregnant right now and considering whether Tylenol is safe in pregnancy, I want you to know that the best available science does not show an association between Tylenol use in pregnancy and an increased risk of autism,\u201d said paediatrician Edith Bracho-Sanchez in a Facebook video.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dr Monique Botha, associate professor in social and developmental psychology at Durham University, was one of a number of international medical experts to state that they were \u201cexceptionally confident\u201d no relationship exists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere are many studies which refute a link, but the most important was a Swedish study of 2.4 million births published in 2024 which used actual sibling data and found no relationship between exposure to paracetamol in utero and subsequent autism, ADHD or intellectual disability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis suggests no causal effect of paracetamol in autism,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration, Marty Makary, also announced that the agency was approving the medication leucovorin, a drug currently used for patients with cancer and anaemia, for the treatment of autistic children upon prescription.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cLeucovorin (folinic acid) has not been a recommended treatment for autism,\u201d said the American Psychiatric Association. \u201cIt will require many more years of research before we know if leucovorin is an appropriate treatment for individuals with autism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The group added: \u201cAutism is a complex disorder, and it is incorrect to imply that a handful of studies have established causation. A strong base of evidence shows that acetaminophen, when taken as directed, is safe for use during pregnancy.
