Like most people, I first came to know Sam Heughan<\/a> as Jamie Fraser on Outlander\u2014the Scottish Highlander who made me fall a little bit in love with Scotland (and, fine, a little bit with him). Since then, he\u2019s only deepened his connection to his homeland by exploring his Scottish heritage in the show Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip with Sam and Graham and, of course, by producing his award-winning Sassenach whisky. At this point, Sam is practically synonymous with Scotland.<\/p>\n

The Cocktail Diaries: A Spirited Adventure<\/p>\n

When I spoke with him about his new book The Cocktail Diaries<\/a>, he admitted that Outlander actually deepened that connection. \u201cMy journey as a spirit producer really started out of coming back to Scotland, realizing what a great culture and heritage we have, and wanting to share it,\u201d he told me.<\/p>\n

What surprised me most, though, was how Heughan came to recognize that spirits as a cultural connection isn’t unique to Scotland. He may be most closely associated with whisky, but what truly excites him is the adventure of experiencing a culture through cocktails.<\/p>\n

That experience rings true, even on our side of the pond. \u201cWhen I was in Louisville, you could feel it\u2014the bourbon culture, the lore, the pride of place,\u201d he said. In New Orleans, he found the same magic in cocktails like the Ramos Gin Fizz: \u201cYou look at the cocktails there, and it\u2019s a representation of the history. You\u2019re literally holding it in your hand.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heughan’s appreciation for history and his adventurous spirit helped shape the structure of the book. The Cocktail Diaries<\/a> isn\u2019t just a recipe collection; it\u2019s a journey. It begins with Sam’s Top 10 cocktails, a list that’s heavy on the classics, but with personal touches and plenty of storytelling. It then moves to simple, timeless cocktails and builds toward more complex, conversation-starting drinks, and ends with recipes contributed by mixologists, or “cocktail geniuses” as Heughan calls them. <\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t want it to be comprehensive,\u201d he told me. \u201cI wanted it to be very personal.\u201d A reminder that \u201cwho knows where that journey will take you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Sazernach stands out as the book\u2019s signature creation\u2014a cherry-spiced Scotch riff on the New Orleans Sazerac. Developed specifically for The Cocktail Diaries, this spirit-forward cocktail captures what this book does so well: it takes an established classic and gives it a twist.<\/p>\n

That thread runs through The Cocktail Diaries<\/a>, especially in the recipes that have a personal touch. At the top of my to-try list is the Bramble, a gin-based cocktail with blackberries (or \u201cbrambles,\u201d as they\u2019re called in Scotland). Heughan credits its inspiration to his habit of filling his pockets with berries on countryside runs, staining his shorts purple before heading home.

For all his talk of heritage and history, though, Heughan doesn\u2019t take himself too seriously. One of the most delightful discoveries while reading The Cocktail Diaries<\/a> is his unabashed love of a pi\u00f1a colada. Relatable! \u201cI\u2019ve yet to find someone who doesn\u2019t secretly love a cheeky tiki cocktail,\u201d he writes. <\/p>\n

That mix of reverence and fun makes The Cocktail Diaries<\/a> feel approachable, even if you\u2019re not the kind of person who keeps a bar stocked with rare spirits. Heughan\u2019s biggest hope? \u201cNot to be scared of it and to just start your own journey.\u201d<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re a fan of Sam Heughan, you\u2019ll enjoy this book for the same reasons you love seeing him on screen: his pride in Scotland, his appreciation for history, his knack for storytelling. And if you enjoy a good cocktail, his recipes are approachable enough to try at home, yet layered with stories that make them feel transportive.<\/p>\n

His stories are immersive, his enthusiasm contagious, and his drinks\u2014 whether you make them or just imagine them\u2014are an invitation.
