{"id":8151,"date":"2025-08-18T23:29:07","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T23:29:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/8151\/"},"modified":"2025-08-18T23:29:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T23:29:07","slug":"heather-humphreys-and-sean-kelly-presidential-face-off-expected-as-fine-gael-reopens-nominations-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/8151\/","title":{"rendered":"Heather Humphreys and Se\u00e1n Kelly presidential face-off expected as Fine Gael reopens nominations \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A contest between former minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/heather-humphreys\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/heather-humphreys\/\">Heather Humphreys<\/a> and the MEP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sean-kelly\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sean-kelly\/\">Se\u00e1n Kelly<\/a> to become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\/\">Fine Gael<\/a>\u2019s presidential candidate became increasingly likely on Monday night after the party\u2019s executive council decided to seek fresh nominations rather than selecting a single candidate. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Nominations will open on Tuesday for two weeks. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Humphreys is said by former colleagues to be keen to become the candidate. Ahead of the meeting, Mr Kelly said he would be \u201cleaning towards contesting\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The meeting was hastily convened after the sudden announcement on Thursday by party nominee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mairead-mcguinness\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mairead-mcguinness\/\">Mairead McGuinness<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/08\/14\/mairead-mcguinness-to-drop-out-of-presidential-race\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/08\/14\/mairead-mcguinness-to-drop-out-of-presidential-race\/\">she was dropping out of the race for health reasons<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms McGuinness said she made the \u201cvery difficult decision\u201d after a stay in hospital and would now prioritise her health. \u201cI do not believe that I have the strength to give the campaign my all,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Her departure has left just one confirmed candidate in the contest, the left-wing Independent TD <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/catherine-connolly\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/catherine-connolly\/\">Catherine Connolly<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">After deliberating for little over an hour on Monday evening, Fine Gael\u2019s executive council decided it would reopen nominations until September 2nd. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Humphreys had ruled herself out of the race earlier this year, saying she wanted to spend more time with her family. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, party sources have said that following the vacation of the nomination by Ms McGuinness, she has expressed strong interest in representing the party in the autumn poll. Her candidacy has been strongly backed by T\u00e1naiste and party leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\">Simon Harris<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sources said that when he contacted Fine Gael ministers on Friday to tell them Ms McGuinness was standing down, he voiced strong support for former Cavan-Monaghan TD Ms Humphreys, who is a long-time ally. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, South MEP Se\u00e1n Kelly has also indicated his interest. He considered contesting the nomination against Ms McGuinness earlier in summer, but he ultimately decided against it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In response to queries from The Irish Times on Monday Mr Kelly said  he was in \u201cdecision mode\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a text sent before the executive meeting, he said that, depending on the outcome, he would \u201cbe leaning towards contesting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A senior party figure, when asked if the outcome of the meeting would lead to a contest between Ms Humphreys and Mr Kelly, said: \u201cMost likely, yes.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Harris was present for the full meeting.
